@ 1080p with all setting maxed out running 4x msaa your gonna be using more then 1.5gb of v-ram. Even with 1.5gb you can do 2x, though on some of the larger maps it can push the memory close to 1.5. Once you go past 1.5gb you get frame drops and thats exactly what happens on friends gtx580 when using 4x msaa. So 1.8gb used for 4x msaa can vary well be possible at times, even though from the greater part of the game it may only be using around 1.5 active, But I for one know 1.5gb is not enough for 4x msaa even with desktop composition disabled.

In raw power, the 7970 is significantly faster than the 670 and even 680 - but if you really really want 3D then Nvidia's Lightboost tech is the only real answer.

Ok a friend let me borrow his two 6970's 2gb

and on ultra, gpu usage in whiterun was at 70% on both cards and i was getting about 38fps with mem usage around 2.5gb.

On high I was getting about 55% usage with 50fps and 1.5gb mem usage.

And then ultra 2d i was getting 40% usage, 60fps and 1.3gb mem usage.

Ultra 3d: 70%/ 38fps/ 2.5gb
High 3d: 55%/ 50fps/ 1.5gb
Ultra 2d: 40%/ 60fps/ 1.3gb

Ultra 3d results explain themselves as the mem usage is over 2.5gb and i was using 2gb cards but, what i dont get is...

If 3d is totally GPU dependant, then why am i getting 50fps on high when mem usage is way under 2gb and the cards running at 55% lol?

Surely its using extra CPU power more than anything?

3D Gaming on AMD Gpu's is terrible? But the fps drop is there without the cards being anywhere near max.

How would it be any different on an Nvidia GPU?

nVidia focuses more on smoother gameplay and steadier frames rates then Radeon.
Radeon believes in raw horsepower..
LMAO! Are most of you guys here serious? Single GPU for 3d??, well... i play games in 3D and first of all, V-ram is not an issue, 2gb or higher is Bliss, plus with Nvidia (i don't know about amd) my fps cuts EXACTLY into half, so if a 7970/680 gets 90fps in BF3 w/o 3d, he will get 45fps wtih 3d and i don't call that smooth gameplay... Even the GTX TITAN performs "okay" on 3d vision with it's 6gb vram, on 1080p 660ti SLI beat it out in every scenario because 3d vision is all about gpu horsepower biggrin.gif
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

So my suggestion is to sell that 7850 FAST!, Nvidia 3d vision is the way to go. So either get a 660 (non ti) SLI, 660 ti SLI, or 670 SLI, You will get good 3d vision with anyone you go with. I used to have a single 670, and 3d on it was total rubbish... No single card will satisfy your 3d vision needs OP. I had to sell mine and get 660 Non ti SLI, if one of my cards gets 65 Fps AVG in battlefield 3 w/o 3d vision + Max settings, two get exactly 63-65fps with 3d vision + Max settings wink.gif
