Intermittent freezing issues

Hey guys, didn't know quite where to put this question so I decided general was the best option. I've been having problems with my PC freezing off and on with no blue screen or error messages in the event manager. It just freezes and the sound glitches until I have to hard reset. It has happened in all sorts of situations and workloads from idle to gameplay and it can go almost a week sometimes between freezes. There are no temp issues, my airflow is good, all the connections are good, I've tried my video card in a different slot, I've completely reinstalled windows, I've run diag on my system drive, I've reseated and reapplied thermal paste to my CPU, I'm not sure what else to try. I've pretty much gone down my troubleshooting list to no avail, and the fact that it has gone 6 days between freezes before makes this very difficult to bench test in my apartment lol. Any suggestions? The specs for the rig are in my signature, thanks in advance for any help or pointers you can give me.

Wow that's a tough one to test for. My first speculation is memory errors (based on it happening randomly and infrequently). Try running Memtest86 (you burn it to a cd and start up from the cd). Let it run for a while and everything passes, then you at least know the memory is ok. A similar, although less conclusive, test is to run prime95 with custom settings using almost all of your ram - if it crashes sooner than later, that could be helpful information.

Yeah it has been a tough one so far lol, luckily it doesn't happen every day or I might have been a bit more drastic in my approach lol. Downloaded the memtest86 from your recommendation, I hadn't thought of that for some reason, I do regular tests with prime95 at 90% load on the RAM while I'm overclocking, but had neglected the memtest86. Came back with no faults or errors after 2 passes, left it on all evening basically. Something I just thought of though was running it on IGP for a while to see if the video card is the problem. I was sitting here thinking I had no way of testing a new video card without buying one completely forgetting I have an integrated chip :-) So I'm gonna try that next, but at least the RAM is ruled out thanks frogger!

Turns out it was the video card, it all came to a head the other night when everything I did crashed the video drivers or froze up or gave me a 0xc4 bsod. Thank goodness for Microcenter's service replacement plan lol, Took back my 560ti and got full refund for it, they had a Gigabyte 7870 on clearance cuz it was an open box, someone had bought it and then realized it didn't fit in their case, so completely unused :-) for 200 bucks and then a 20 dollar rebate on top of that, so a 7870 for 180?!?!? deal of the year in my book lol.

I had the same problem in the past where my computer locks up and makes a annoying loop sound coming from a game or just idling. Best way to get rid of this in my opinion is to format your hard drive or ssd then re-install windows. It worked for me, hopefully it will work for you. thumb.gif

EDIT: I guess it was too late for me to say something since the problem was fixed.
