XFX 7970 GHz gets incredibly hot while gaming.

Thread Starter
Hello OCN, I came here posting today about my worries about my XFX 7970 GHz that I have had for a few months (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150632). My concern is with its heating during gaming. In very graphic intensive games like Far Cry 3 and recently Tomb Raider, I consistently get to around 88c and even up to 90c. I am positive it could reach higher if I really stressed it and did not adjust the fan speed. This obviously concerns me........

I know its not case cooling or ambient temperature because I have used different graphic cards in this exact same setup and there was little to no overheating (my old 6950 NEVER went above 70c.

What are my options? Should I rma the card? It performs well but in very intensive games I can not help but feel like the card is being damaged or close to it at least.

Thanks.

Replacing thermal paste might help.

Either RMA the card or reseat the cooler and use fresh TIM. The XFX 7000 series cards have picked up a bit of a reputation for overheating like this.

Above normal for your card is around 90c
is a strange issue but you should be fine biggrin.gif

My 7970s reach 85c while playing crysis3 @ 100% load
75c while playing starcraft2 @ 90% load
but incredibly 58c while playing NFS most wanted @ 90% load

They call it "RED" for a reason rolleyes.gif

Nah i really don't know anything- i can tell you that my would go for 90C during games... eventually the stock fan died... I eventurally went over to one of these :

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835118061

Which kept my temps below 55- even in games.

If you don't RMA it def check out alternate cooling options and make sure you do the thermal paste right smile.gif

best of luck

Thanks for all the quick responses! I am wary of reapplying thermal paste. I am fairly sure it voids warranty and considering how new this card is it would really suck for me to screw something up and be out of a card. In any case what is the go to thermal paste for graphic cards? I have only used AS5 on older builds so I am fairly naive in this regard.

The h220 is coming out soon and if that is compatible I might consider setting that up for my gpu and cpu.

check out the red-mod section in gpu cooling.. xfx.. i had 6950's and emailed them and asked if i can put a water block ( thats all i said) they wrote it up in the support section. when i put the 2nd one on i went to let them know and the guy said you cant do it .. ( i kept the message that said i could and told him who told me.. in the end it was fine.
so if they say no .. ask again on a different time of the day. ;> and keep notes.
btw the red-mod or gpu mod is where they put a pump/block of a closed loop cooler on the gpu and hang a radiator in the fan area.
get some thermal paste that is non conductive and non capacitive.. mx-4 is one of those types.. and it lowered my temps. ;>
