Shooting couples. 2 Speedlight questions.

Thread Starter
In a bout one month my friend and i will be shooting a prom.
This is not for profit, so we are trying to use what we have.

We will mostly be shooting couples, duh.
We are working on speedlight placement for couples, as i assume it is different than a single portrait set up.

What should the speedlight placement be for couples?
Is there still a main and fill flash, or would they both become main lights?

Our gear:
wireless triggers (2)
sb-800 flash (main)
yn-560 II flash (fill)
54" umbrella (through or reflect)
32" ish umbrella (through or reflect)
Hair light softbox
Back drop
D7000
Lens 24-70 or 70-200. I assume we will be just using the 24-70 due to the location.

I assume If we have one main and one fill, we always have the man and woman on the same side to get the same flash?

We will be doing full body, mid and upper portrait shots. We are hoping to not have to move the lights/stands.

Or if someone knows of a good guide and could post the link.
Thanks.

one option is 2 speedlights in umbrellas both at 45* angles. to keep it super simple and not take up tons of space

i dont do much studio style portraits but on a simple setup depending on space and how you can orient the lights i would test out using both lights as simply a way to get a clean proper exposure. if its one key one fill then depending on how its oriented you might end up with one person that gets the right amount of key and a little fill and the other person may get slightly less key and just fill. im not sure if im correct on this in terms of the proper way to light a photo of 2 people but using both lights at the same level not necessarily as key but just to get a proper exposure each light will key and kinda fill each person that way both people get the exact same amount of light.

the only other setup i can think for 2 people would be one key that is more centered to them and the other light as a back light. like i said i dont have much experience lighting for 2 people in the shot so im not sure what the default setup normally would be for that type of shot thumb.gif

I think having two light sources of equal power on either 45 degree side will give you rather flat lighting. Do you have a reflector? You can setup the key light at around 45 degrees and the reflector at the other 45 degrees. Or you can use the other flash at very low power if you don't.

Something like this:
