Apparently Star Wars: First Assault which has been kept rather quiet since it first appeared on Kotaku was intended as an experiment to test the market for future Star Wars FPS games and it's code would be the base for future games to build upon. The game in question being Star Wars: Battlefront III, a game Star Wars and FPS fans have eagerly awaited for years. However since Disney took over, the games future and the recently showcased Star Wars: 1313 are now in limbo.

...Star Wars: First Assault, our source says, would lead up to Battlefront III. This new Battlefront would use nothing from the Battlefront III that has already been in production at studios like Free Radical and Slant Six, our source says. Instead, LucasArts would build Battlefront III based on code from First Assault.

Loved both Battlefront games. They are stupid to even doubt the market for Battlefront 3. The execution needs to be good though. None of this 60 dollar paid Beta BS
Why don't they just do a Battlefront II HD reboot version to see if there's demand? Same game but with better textures, longer draw distance, etc. and some bonus content. Same game mechanics as II though, then they could work on making an original sequel.

Probably because the entire "modern warfare" theme is very tired at this point. Time for some sci-fi shooters or something else a bit different. Tired of shooting AR 15s in the Desert

I've repeatedly wished for COD to go back to WWII, it really is that bad at this point. Let Battlefield go with future warfare, COD go with WWII, coexist. Then this, which if done right should be very good.
I'd also like to point out, if they're making an entire AAA game just to test the market for another game, if Battlefront III gets greenlit, they're going to put a massive budget into it. The comment about 1313's fate being undecided does scare me though.
This is also not Battlefront III, keep that in mind as well as your expectations for the actual Battlefront III. Remember this is First Assault, only a test of the market demand for Battlefront III.

That is an excellent idea. They're basically selling Bananas in a market to attempt to see what the demand is for watermelons...

CoD just needs to die entirely. WWII was over done and over used and is boring as all hell now, thanks to CoD, and as is Modern Warfare, yet again, thanks to CoD. The shooter market would be better if CoD died entirely. This would force developers to stray from CoD's mechanics and tactics to deliver something new and unique to take the FPS crown in the market place and all the cash that comes with it.
I definitely hope for a huge budget for Battlefront III and I hope it steals the FPS crown from CoD in sales...
What was the 3rd person shooter genre? I really only recall a few games. Battlefront II, Mass Effect, Old resident evils(not really shooters), then what??? I feel like I am forgetting something
Edit* Starwars: Shadows of the Empire for N64. lol
NVM
Dead Space
Uncharted
GTA
Max Payne
Gears of War
Weird because of all those games I only really played mass effect and Battlefront 2
Got tired of GTA really fast, played gears of war like 5 years ago for a bit, never got into uncharted or Dead Space or Max Payne
