A few good whacks and you are good!!! I might post a guide if the mastermind behind it doesn't mind.

Feel free. I though it was so obvious it didn't need explanation. The fact you feel the need to post a guide is a sleight on the intelligence of your peers (perhaps deservedly, but sad none the less).

Nah man, it's documentation. You can never have enough. You are probably the first person to do this.

How is that sad? This is OCN. Can never have enough guides and tutorials.

In the (very) little time I've watch this forum, I've seen a number of obviously brilliant people countered with some where I wonder how they get out of bed in the morning (I suppose someone wrote them a guide).

In my humble opinion, if you can't figure it out from the quite obvious video I posted (mount chip in vice, place block of wood, whack it with hammer) then you have no business doing it in the first place.

Writing a detailed guide about it is just inviting the ham fisted mouth breathers to try it and break something other than the adhesive bond.

You could always preface it with this disclaimer : "Warning, if you attempt the procedure shown in this guide and fail, you have no business breeding _ever_". Procreation favours the stupid too...

i didnt use a vice , but used a hammer and a box cutter do delid some pentiums at first to practice on..

OP, can you post your vid again on OCN, i clicked it, but had to download it (a link?) first smile.gif

i have to say, this looks like a very easy way to delid,
but when i watch the vid, its almost like the ihs is already loose,
cant imagine it will come off after only a few tacks with the hammer..lol

i still have a few pentiums laying around, i will try your method soon,
i need a camera first to make a vid while im delidding them smile.gif

I unsealed the box, pulled the cpu out and put it in the vice. It was as tight as it came from the factory. (Actually, thats not strictly true, I smeared TIM on it with the intention of trying it out first but popped the cap instead)

I apologise for the video issues, I had not registered m4v as the correct mime-type on my server so it was serving it up as a text file. Should be fixed now.

I used my iPad, then bluetoothed the vid to my desktop and used handbrake to re encode with reduced res and bit rate. Held the iPad upright with a pair of channel locks and a rubber band.

I thought about a YouTube or similar but then it's just another privacy trap and I don't plan on doing this often. Love your avatar btw.

If anyone is in Perth, western australia I have a de lidded i5 sitting here doing nothing (patient from first post).

I just wanted to stop by and say, Thank you fnarfbargle. +rep for sure for this method I will be trying here today when I get back.

At first I was going to attempt the Razor method, but came to the realization that even the thinnest razor I had around could not fit in the almost non-existent gap between the IHS and PCB.

But with this method, I have a vice, I have a block of wood, and I have a calibrated hammer sooooo here I come COOLER CPU ! drool.gif
