Thats because 6970's dont overclock nearly as well as GCN. My reference diamond 7970's overclock from 925 core to 1300 on water. On the stock air cooler they did 1250 with a TIM change.

If going with a 7970 make sure to grab a reference board. They are unlocked and have full cover blocks available

Ones i run

I am currently in the process of switching from my 680 to dual 7970's. This thread has actually been a big help at just the right time. I was leaning toward the sapphires and now I have some good back up as to why. The more I've read about AMD's focus on improving frame latency, driver improvements, aggressive pricing, and game bundling, the more I'm wondering why I've taken so long to make this discussion.
