The perpetually struggling AMD announced Tuesday that it would sell and lease back its corporate campus in Austin, Texas to generate $164 million in cash. It’s a quick way to make a buck, but it could raise questions about the long-term viability of the company.

In January 2013, AMD announced it had hired new executives to focus the company in the mobile CPU sector, which came after a lawsuit accusing former employees of stealing company secrets. The company suffered a net loss of $1.18 billion in 2012 and has noticeably reduced its chip manufacturing capability.

This is horrible, THEY NEED TO SUCCEED! Make faster RAM, cmon guys! I will buy it! Make those SSD's cheap! DO SOMETHING! Don't die. frown.gif /crying

Seriously, get your act together, I don't want to have to buy Intel/Nvidia with outrageous prices just because there is no competition. redface.gif

Yout hink faster slow ram is their problem?

The reality of this is, No matter what amd does in the gpu or cpu area there sales will always be low.

The number of people that will never buy a component made by amd is very high.

If they should make a processor faster than intel another argument will be created as to why it shouldnt be purchased.

Same for the GPU department. Even though a 7970 is faster and cost $100 less than a gtx 680. Look what has and is happening.

In the long term that's going to make everything worse.

Sony are using AMD CPUs in the PS4 and it's rumoured the next XBOX is doing the same thing. AMD aren't going anywhere lol

You read that they were going to sell. Today's news are that they actually sold it.

The whole reasoning for this is...
Quote:
Even the greatest real estate prices are little incentive for a company with a lot of cash on hand to sell their offices. However, these kind of agreements occasionally come in handy to provide extra cash, which AMD will need in the first quarter of next year. AMD just refinanced a $485 million payment required to pay off debt from a $1.5 billion convertible senior notes offering in August of 2007, but it cannot refinance a $225 million payment that is due to be paid to Globalfoundries in Q1 2013. The proceeds from the Austin campus sale should be able to cover that obligation almost entirely.

All of you who think this is bad news should be happily mistaken. Company is actively seeking ways to cut needless expenditures. This should be seen as a good thing so long as it does not impede their ability to produce the same yields.

Why all the doom and gloom? Samsung, HP, Lenovo, IBM and many others have sold certain pieces of their real estate and moved to leasing agreements.
