[RPS] Maxis Insider Tells RPS: SimCity Servers Not Necessary - Page 10

I thought this thread was about servers not being necessary, not some rant about a year old article about not being kicked and comparing completely difference responses to this DIFFERENT article from DIFFERENT people. Go home, thread derailer.

If servers really only handle some of the basic city interaction online stuff, making a cracked version or an official offline mode is much easier. If servers did tons of computations and hid large chunks of core code away, cracking or making an offline mode would be much harder. So, seeing that the game runs without a connection for any period of time means that the files are being stored locally somewhere and doesn't sound quite as "significant" as Lucy said.

And it's VERY clear that SimCity could easily be offline. Nothing is impossible. The only reason it's online is to stop piracy. IF EA were at least honest about that, it would be better for them. But coupled with lies and a disastrous launcher, they're left with egg on their face.

But, sure, defend EA to the death.

It's funny, because it's clear EA are trying to get mainstream people to game (Hence the extremely low requirements) which I wish them luck for doing, mainstream people probably barely even know what Simcity is.
I also only know a single non-techie person who still runs a dual core, and she got confused when she was trying to play Facebook games that aren't scrabble ripoffs, people really underestimate the average OEM PC and how long people keep them...I know multiple people whose computer knowledge extends no further than "This no work. I call friend/family techie now." running 1035Ts.

I'm going to step back from my earlier comments about server connectivity causing sims to go in circles, as it appears they do that regardless and I just haven't noticed it when the connection is there: http://answers.ea.com/t5/Miscellaneous-Issues/Traffic-quot-AI-quot-This-is-why-services-and-traffic-are-broken/td-p/737060
Quote:
One of the biggest problems people are having with the game is the massive traffic-jams that seem to clog the entire system up. Now, this is responsible for the ineffective coverage of ANY traffic-based services (Fire, Police, Garbage, Medical, Education, Mass-Transit.) There are also a number of smaller complaints that may also be directly related to how Glassbox handles traffic.

"Workers aren't commuting."
"There aren't enough workers, even though I have plenty of population."
"Tourism is broken."
"Emergency services are slow/unresponsive/broken."

The agent system that is used for utilities (power, water, sewage) seems to be identical to the system that handles traffic.

The problem is that, just as power can sometimes take a ridiculously long time to fill the entire map (because the "power agents" just randomly move about with no sense) traffic and workers can do the same thing. Workers leave their homes as "people agents." These agents go to the nearest open job, not caring at all where they worked yesterday. They fill the job, and the next worker goes to the next building and fills that job, and so it goes until all the jobs are "filled." So, when you have all your "worker" sims leaving their houses for work in the morning, they all cluster together like some kind of "tourist pack" until they have all been sucked into "jobs." They don't seem to care if the job is Commercial or Industrial, only that it's a job.

"Scholars" are handled exactly the same way. As are school busses and mass-transit agents. This is why you see the "trains" of busses roaming through your city, and why entire sections of town may never see a school bus, despite having plenty of stops... Once all the busses are full, they return to school and stay there until school is done for the day.

Now, here is where it gets really good... In the evening, when work and school lets out, they all leave and proceed to the absolute closest "open" house. They don't "own" their houses. The "people" you see are actually just mindless agents (much like the utilities agents, as I said earlier) making the whole idea of "being able to follow a 'Sim' through their entire day" utterly POINTLESS!!"

The reason traffic problems cause so many other side-effects, is because EVERYTHING relies on those "people" who are stuck in herds trying to go to whatever closest "slot" they can fill. Casinos go bust because "tourists" are just "shopper agents" from out of town. You MUST put casinos RIGHT next to the entrance to your city if you want them to succeed. Placing street-car stops by the casinos can actually cause more harm than good! Why? Because the "shoppers" will board the streetcar stop (because it's the closest open slot) and be shuttled to a shopping district instead.

Sharing resources and services gets to be a joke, because all the vehicles ("agents") get bound up with the busses at the entrances to cities.

TL;DR: Fixing the way the game handles traffic and "sims" will fix 90% of the problems plaguing players!
Not an official source by any means, but it is consistent with what I've experienced. Nothing more than the regional level is server-side, but region-level play is a huge portion of the game regardless. Glassbox is most definitely in its infancy.

Interesting read, thanks for sharing it.

It seems like there were a lot of great ideas put into SimCity, however the implementation is a little lacking. Hopefully, for people who want to enjoy the game, things like this traffic issue will be patched over the coming months.

Purely personally speaking I don't agree with the direction EA / Maxis are taking things in terms of server based play. I also don't like the way they have handled things in terms of PR, they may or may not be lying to us, but it certainly feels like they are and to be honest perception is often more important than reality.

For a game like SimCity I want to be able to play it on my laptop whilst on a plane or on a remote site (I end up on one every so often), really anywhere that I might not have an internet connection. That is why I like games like KSP - no DRM, lots of modding potential, runs on local machine only, can be played anywhere and will still be available in 10 years time.

Loved that read too, it's funny how the sims just go into whatever house is available and live there for the day lol. The AI is a bit borked, I definitely admit that, but it's nothing that can't be fixed, and once it is fixed, the small annoyances the game has (protesters that you can't please!) will be gone.

Exactly. What GrizzleBoy is trying to avoid with his long posts is the simple truth that single player, non regional gameplay is not really dependent on servers and that is the main point of contention. And in that regard Lucy Bradshaw and Katsarelis did in fact lie, because if you can play for around 20 minutes without being kicked out of the game, then the code infrastructure to keep the city running is mainly hosted locally and there is no need for a significant code change in order to make it work indefinitely, because, unless I'm seeing things wrong, there is no amount of "server tells local computer what will happen in the next 20 minutes" that can forsee the huge amount of changes I can make to a city in 5 minutes, let alone in 20 (and even if there was, choosing between alternatives would require a local game engine, making the whole argument even more clear as to why the server connection is just pro forma - that is, for DRMs sake only - and not really necessary), and as far as I know the city doesn't fall apart in those 20 minutes, except....

... for the fact that it does fall apart regardless of whether there is a connection or not, because the game code is just plain simplistic and does not reflect at all what the game advertising says, as Apocalypse (see below) just said.

Most insane game of musical chairs ever. As for the protesters you can't please, I love the "complaining about high rent". Really? You want me to tank your land value? Ok, how about a coal power plant as a neighbor, happy now?

LOL at the essay-length post form OCN's Official Unofficial EA spokesperson. He'll say he's fighting for common sense, but really he's finding every single excuse/reason to defend the game from the rightful abuse it's getting.

I never even understood the "high rent" complaint before O_O.

I'm sure a sewage outflow pipe turning their gardens into a nice black boggy mess would help too.

Most annoying thing for me is the road utilization. Would also have liked if bus routes could be set up.
