The D1080 are near-field speakers. They definitely sound better than the M50w's satellites, much clearer mids and treble is just so clean.
Obviously they do lack a sub meaning you're not going to get the punch as with the M50w, but for what it is... the bass doesn't distort and there is some kick to it.

I honestly think the D1080 is better than the Audioengine A2, which goes for $40 more.
You can always add a sub to the D1080 later on when you have the money.

So I have it basically narrowed down to three different setups, the swan d1010, the harmon kardon soundstick iii, and the corsair sp2500. What do you guys think would be the best setup? If you guys have any other opinions though, let me know.

The D1010's are in a different league from the other two.

While the D1010's are an entry into the world of semi-pro monitor audio, the SP2500 are horribly overpriced for the sound and quality; and the h/k's are overrated and overpriced.

While both 2.1 sets will ultimately have more low end than the D1010, the D1010 has better treble and smoother mids the other two can only dream of having.

The Corsair sounds hollow and has an entire chunk of sound missing - which you will realise once you compare it to a proper set like the M50w.
The h/k's do sound better but the plastic enclosure rattles and crackles with volume, the 'sub' is not a sub due to its small size and hence poor frequency response; and the satellite speakers have a tendency to sound strident given the material they are made from.

If you can, step it up to the D1080-iv. It's $30 more and you do get the benefit of an even better low-range, with no drop in the already natural mids and smooth treble.

These arent bad:
http://www.amazon.com/Edifier-S330D-Multimedia-Speaker-Black/dp/B002BA5JLW/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1363290971&sr=1-1&keywords=edifier+s530d

or

http://www.amazon.com/Alesis-M1-Active-520-Powered/dp/B000EJTXZU/ref=sr_1_cc_2?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1363291020&sr=1-2-catcorr&keywords=alesis+m1+active+520

The Alesis sound alot more clear and detailed but it doesnt have much bass.

This set is a nice one to:
http://www.amazon.com/KRK-Studio-Reference-Monitors-Speaker/dp/B005EILP7A/ref=sr_1_3?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1363291181&sr=1-3&keywords=krk+rokit+5

If your lucky you might be able to find this second hand for a good price, its one of the best PC speaker sets i ever heard (very nice for gaming, movies and stomping music)
http://www.amazon.com/Edifier-USA-S730-Multimedia-Speaker/dp/B004EOOAXQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1363291335&sr=8-1&keywords=edifier+s730

(I personally think the Alesis give the best bang for buck though, there mid/high's truly sounds amazing for this price)

It is a center channel......not a normal speaker in the way which you think they are.

Again. I will make this clear.

Receiver+Cambridge audio S20 = happy OP

Do NOT buy studio monitors or powered speakers. They are a lot of buck for very little audio bang.

All edifier stuff sounds tinny.
