[eTeknix] Asetek are taking Cooler Master to Court over Multiple Patent Infringements

Ever since Cooler Master released the new Seidon series, currently consisting of the Seidon 120M, 120XL and 240M, many people were saying – these pump units look a lot like Asetek rebrands. Yet Cooler Master weren’t using an Asetek mounting kit, didn’t have any Asetek branding anywhere on the product and made absolutely no mention that the products had any association with Asetek whatsoever. To me this seemed mildly strange because the pump and radiator resemblance is significant although the differences are equally as visible from the outside. The long and short of it is that Asetek have now filed legal proceedings against Cooler Master and this makes the design similarities more suspicious. However, it is important to note that the case is still in early proceedings and so it is impossible to say who is right and wrong at the present time – it could indeed be the case that Cooler Master isn’t infringing at all. We do know that there is a patent suing culture today where summoning up legal proceedings for the sheer sake, (in the hope of a windfall-win of damages), is normal behaviour – Apple lead by example here.

You know not all lawsuits are frivolous.

Edit: Checking out their patents right now.

Edit 2: Looks like Asetek has a decent case to make against CM. Again not all lawsuits/patent disputes are frivolous.

I don't feel like this one is. To me, this is different to the spate of patent lawsuits filed by Apple. Asetek have been making these units for awhile, and it's reasonably safe to say they had a massive hand in creating the AIO market as we know it today. I'm not talking about flops like Bigwater and Aquagate products.

I'm pretty sure because the rebrands, actually buy asetek units from them, with permission to rebrand it under their own name.
and they probably mention the company somewhere in the packaging.

rebrand isn't the same as knock off.

a rebrand was one company purchasing the product from the original manufacture, with permission to rebrand.

a knock off is a product design stolen from another company, taking all the profit and credit for the design, and the original creator nothing.

My friend has the H100 and I'd much rather have the Silver Arrow that I'm currently using. I get better temps and assuming you have room for that tall of a heatsink, it's actually much easier to mount because getting that radiator mounted with no ability to change hose length is just retarded.

Now, I will admit I recommended him to get it because I was curious how they work and he was intrigued by the idea of it as well; having said that, I would not get one again or recommend one to anyone else.

Asetek licenses its products out to companies like Corsair for rebranding. In this case CM created an original product.
