another 'what' cooler question

Hi
Need a little help choosing a cooler - heads starting to hurt

I've got
Fractal Design Core 1000 case with a Asus F2A85-M and a A10 APU
Memory is Patriot Viper 3 "Venom Red" 4GBx2
The case Supports CPU coolers up to 148mm in height
The height and memory clearance is an issue
So I'm looking for a cooler that will definitely fit (height) without fouling the memory sticks
The stock amd cooler is noisy and though OK for everyday stuff overheats on not so demanding games
I'm not intending to overclock and not looking to pay a fortune

Anyone got any recommendations - please

Hello and welcome to OCN.

No idea where you are on our big blue marble but first coolers I think of it Thermalright True Spirit 120m and maybe Macho 120 (often 150mm will fit in 148mm spec) because they short enough and are offset to clear RAM.

The height limitation and the high profile ram seriously limit the options. Do you have a rear 120mm exhausts fan? I think this might be one of thous instances where a all in on liquid cooler like the H40 or H55 might actually make sense.

If you want to stick with air then there is the Thermalright AXP-100. It should not overlap with the memory.

Read the review --> http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/5216/thermalright-axp-100-low-profile-cpu-cooler-review/index.html

The Akasa Nero LX Low Profile should be out soon to though there are no review on it yet. It should be pretty cheap tough so if you are on tight budget it might be worth keeping an eye out for it.

Edit: Good call doyll. The maco might just fit without the fan and it should be able to cool a A10 passively (well the PSU fan will suck air through it).

True Spirit 120M about 1c warmer than Macho 120 about 1c warmer than Macho HR-02. As FD Core 1000 is a traditional tower and back vent fan I would go with a tower cooler instead of a downflow becasue it will cool better. TS 120M will do a great job. smile.gif

doyll, PontiacGTX & Bit_reaper thanks for the replys & apology for the lax response - thanks for all that searching.

I'd looked at the low profile type but wasn't keen, would they fit over the memory OK. If I knew for certain that anyone one of them would fit then it would be a contender. And yes there is the air flow thing to consider.

I had looked at the True Spirit 120m, one of the online review sits wasn't to happy about its noise levels which kept me looking. The Macho 120 I had seen but for some unknown reason not looked at ? Gets good reviews and fingers crossed the extra 2mm wont be a problem (slight case mod maybe). I'm now thinking that then Macho is the one to go for.

Water cooling, I'm not a overclocker so have never really given them much attention, I assume that water cool option would double the cost, that would make it an option of last resort - is worth mentioning though.

So unless someone has another cooler or thoughts on why the Macho wouldn't be a good idea then my problem is solved

Again thanks for the help

The Viper 3 might have too high of heatspreaders on them, thereofre i woul dgo with the TS 120m since it gives you more RAM clearance. The fan that comes with it is mediocre. Just get a better fan with it though, eg: Noiseblocker eloop PS or Noctua F12

just a quick update
the Macho 120 fits ok with clearance for both the case and memory (blue slots not black)
the cpu temperature is cooler and the fan quieter
the only aggravation is that the Fractal Design Core 1000 side wall resonates and gives of a noticeable noise - one more thing to fix

thanks for the help people

Thanks for letting us know how it turned out. thumb.gif

Shouldn't be too hard to stop the side from resonating. Just twisting the top to bottom alignment a little so you have to push of opposite corners to get the catches to slide into place may do it. .. or a piece of foam on top of the Macho 120 that presses against the side cover a little. wink.gif
