4x SSDs in RAID 0 for ~2GB/s read: Realistic?

So I'm reconsidering the storage for my next build, and I thought it might be fun to go 4xSSD in RAID 0. In an effort to maximize performance, I would like to make sure my RAID controller is up for the task. It's my understanding that onboard raid controllers top out around 600-1000MB/s. However, a single Samsung 840 Pro SSD alone can run at a good 500MB/s clip. I'm looking around for RAID controller cards that would be capable of controlling four high-spec SSDs (like the 840 Pros) without presenting its own bottleneck. However, some preliminary research shows that many of the popular RAID controller solutions top out at 6Gbps. This is under the target I'd like to hit.

Are RAID controllers simply not up to the task of delivering breakneck speeds in the 2GB/s range? I'm sure there are some prohibitively expensive "enterprise" controllers that might be up to the task, but I haven't found any.

Does anyone have any experience with something like this? Is the 1000MB or 6Gbps limitation just the reality of the current landscape of RAID controllers, or is there a solution I haven't found yet?

The 6Gbps limit is the limit of SATA 3 connections. In my experience with setting up a friend's RAID 0 SSDs (3x60GB) it isn't 100% scaling at all. He's got about 15% space left now and still sees 500+MBps in reads, and about 350MBps writes though, so it definitely helps longevity of speeds.

Another problem is you're comparing MB/s with Gb/s. One Gb/s is equivalent to 100MB/s. Therefore you'd see the theoretical limit of SATA 3 at 600MB/s. If you want more than that, you'll need to go to a PCIe based SSD. The downside to this is that you can't boot windows from them as I recall, and you can't do hardware RAID.

You could try using a software RAID solution to overcome the PCIe issue, but if you're going with SATA based drives, you're seeing the edge of performance with one drive right now. More just keeps speeds from drooping as you use the SSD.

EDIT: SATA as a standard uses 1000 bytes per KB instead of 1024. Just had to modify some math.

Even if you could possibly hit 2Gb/s, what could you possibly use it for that would be able to utilize those speeds? There really isn't any medium that you can transfer over to hit that, nor could you really fully saturate that internally, so beyond benchmarks you're going to have no use for them.

That being said, you could use some RAID controllers on a couple of PCIE lanes and hit those speeds. If you do use the 840 pros, you'll want to use the 512GB ones as they have some of the max speeds out there.

Wow! That's rad. The RocketRAID 2720 card looks like just what I'm looking for. Thanks for posting these links. I feel like even their advertising is a little underwhelming -- the 3GB/s read in reality is a lot more appealing than their "up to 6Gb/s" selling point.

And for the people asking why -- I think that the word "why" should be outlawed on an enthusiast forum like this. smile.gif

You can hit 2-8GB/s with raid 0 SSDs, but the more speed you want, the more the controller will cost.


If you want extreme real world performance, you fill your mobo with 48GB of the highest performing ram you can possibly put in your PC. Then you turn that into a ram drive. The ram drive will have 20-30GB/s read speeds and write speeds. Throw skyrim on the ram drive and have fun with no loading screens.

Yeah! Revodrives must be heaven, but I am just a mere mortal. A handful of SSDs and a realistically priced controller win in this situation because it's actually something in the realm of affordability. redface.gif

I have the 2720SGL. Only have 2 HDDs on it atm but is is very easy to set-up and use and it has good performance.

Mehhhhhh wellllll.

Ok here is the issue. I have two SSDs in raid 0. I get about 1.1GB/s read and about 900MB/s write. The only difference it makes is when I am editing 40GB+ of pictures in a batch edit in CS5. Other then that, I DON'T notice a difference in day to day tasks compared to the SSD in my laptop.

You really have to be a massive power use to get the full potential out of 2GB/s read.

I am all for having the maximum possible speed simply because it is fun, but I do want you to be fully aware that it will be a waste of money.
