Really, the primary reason I'd consider a large solid state volume is for size. I'm getting a little claustrophobic trying to stay at 75% of the cap with even my 256GB drive, and four 128s in a RAID 0 seems like a considerably more alluring option than a single 512.

The nice speeds doing bulk writes is just kind of a perk! I have also sworn off mechanical drives in my primary system. redface.gif

You can get a single 500GB SSD for ~$300, I'd rather 2 of those in RAID 0.

Those bulky write have to be close to 80GB or very specific file types to get any real world performance.

Think of it this way. Lets say that a normal SSD has a real world write speed of 300MB/s and you are trying to write a 10GB file (maybe a movie and some pics). That would take about 40 seconds.

Raid 0 SSDs (and I am speaking from experience here only has a real world write speed of 550-600MB/s) is only going to do the same job in 20-30 seconds.

IDK what the real world performance speeds for the writes would be for raid 0 with 4 drives, but it is not going to be jaw dropping.

It would be one thing if you wanted to constantly edit media day in and day out, but I can say with confidence that you aren't going to be doing that without going insane after a few weeks. tongue.gif

I think to get the BEST possible real world performance, you would be better off trying to muddle though the low storage capacity and buy a haswell system when it comes out.

Then you get a single 256GB SSD for boot and games, a 60GB SSD to cache a 1TB segate drive.

Between the better CPU and the better utilization of the ram, you will see a noticeable difference right there. The intel sata 3 ports are only icing on the cake.

They have been multiple times lately. Last week they were $280 at multiple distributors. They should be on sale again soon. Or get some 256GB drives ~$150-$160 each

Samsung 840 500s are $369 on the egg . Where are you seeing those prices? I also had my heart set on the Pros, which are even more expensive ($519).

edit: oops, missed that post while I was formatting this one.

edit 2: What would make you prefer two 500GB drives with onboard RAID vs. four 120GB drives with a dedicated controller card? Surely the IOPS would be higher with four drives, unless I'm missing something? Higher access times maybe?

edit 3: (also, wow, other than size, don't know how I didn't realize that one. rolleyes.gif At that price then yeah, the size would be worth it. But I'd rather have the IOPS over the space? I would be completely intimidated with a 1TB solid state volume.)

Why do you need 2GB/s again?


You would need to be write/read bulk data to another array.

Or, you would be doing a bulk load to RAM.... but those are rare.
