Light weight linux

Thread Starter
Ok I have been using Ubuntu Linux since 8.01. I am looking for an extreme light weight Linux for websurfing on 10 year old boxes. I have never done a command line install but would love to learn how. I have seen arc Linux and I think manjaro is sweet but want to learn more about command line before messing with that.

You can do a debian netinstall that only installs the bare minimum. Then you can add a lightweight DE to it for browsing. Arch and Gentoo also come out of the box with no GUI so you can add the packages you want, but they are a little more difficult to install.

The Arch linux repositories have far more up to date software than in the Debian repos. The problem with Arch Linux is that due to its rolling release structure, there end up being quite a few points that require manual intervention to prevent the setup from breaking from updating from the repositories. Of course this can help you in learning how to use Linux, but it ultimately pretty frustrating to have updates break your OS on a regular basis.

Both require that you set up your environment if you want to have a traditional desktop, which can help you learn what composes a typical Linux distribution. Arch Linux also has an excellent wiki that walks you through all the steps to set up most of the traditional user based software, which makes it one of the easiest distributions to learn.

For web surfing on an old laptop or Desktop, try Pup Linux. http://puppylinux.org

What would be the best way to learn about Linux? I am thinking a command line installation would be the best. I am personally more of a hands on learning but reading works too if I can do real word work to better understand what I have read. I like the look of Manjaro distro but am unsure how well it will fair on a 1.8ghz AMD sempron with 1 gig of RAM and onboard video. I don't have the PC's in front of me or I could give better system info. I am asking considering a hacked (not sure it that is the right term) BIOS for overclocking. Hope fully I will be in my office sometime this weekend. I will post full specs and more on what I am planning. I right now am on my Droid X so this is a little rough to type a long reply.

Arch Linux (and likely Debian) would run on that fine assuming you don't use any resource intensive applications. I used to run Arch Linux on a P4 2.2 with 1 GB of RAM a year ago. I ran a simple openbox setup and later converted it into a minecraft server (Sadly the minecraft server was a little slow, but playable).

^ is 1gb the spec? In that case minimal to light 64bit and any 32-bit distro should work. What are the exact specs?
