PC BSOD caused by atikmpag.sys

I've got a 4850 thats been having update issues, I finally got it to update the other day and now when I go to run WEI, the screen flashes and says "amd graphics have crashed and been recovered" and then it'll usually flash again and then crash with a blue screen stop code of 0x116. I've been scouring the internet looking at how to fix this because its my old rig my parents use now. It's got a copy of 64bit W7 ultimate that i had installed in place of the 32bit vista basic it came with. Any and all help is much appreciated, I found a thread on here that goes into detail about removing every amd graphics driver to prepare for an upgrade so I may try that. I've also been seeing mixed results about ATIman 7.02 and AMD uninstall utility. Windows7_Vista_jcgriff2.zip 1850k .zip file

I use driver sweeper to properly remove drivers before installing new ones. http://www.guru3d.com/content_page/guru3d_driver_sweeper.html

I had 116's and turned out to be my 6950 went faulty and was not increasing volts when going from 2d to 3d mode and driver would crash or system would crash. Could be other reasons for it though I guess.

4850 is a very old card by now. Make sure it's not overheating. And use GPU-z to see the other temp sensors. Also check fan speed.

I used driver sweeper because it was stuck with 11.2 drivers and i had to remove the AMD CCC through control panel, boot into safe mode and I ran driver sweeper and then that successfully installed 13.1. The card is running about ~45c and I've got an antec cyclone right underneath it so I don't think it would be an overheating issue. I guess it could be having issues switching the voltages, but for reference I played the witcher 2 on this thing over the summer with it overclocked and there weren't any issues so I'm hoping the card isn't physically shot. I may try these steps hopefully to correct some busted software, but again I'm open to anyone's input. Worst comes to worst, I've got a 4350 laying around and my mobo even has onboard nvidia chipset..

Also, after reading through that guide the OP said AMD approved his guide and went on to release their own uninstall utility which I found some reviewers say it worked perfectly well. My questions is should I uninstall through control panel first and then run the uninstall utility?

A week old but AMD's uninstallation from Add/Remove Programs works fine. You will choose Express Uninstall All AMD software. It'll wipe everything related to AMD. Win7 is smarter now, it doesn't load back old drivers when you reboot the machine. If you are using win7 or win8, there's a way to know if it uninstalls correctly: Your resolution will change while uninstalling. It'll revert back to standard VGA driver and it's gonna be 800x600 i think.

After 11.x drivers, I stopped using any driver cleaning utility.

Well I found someone on PC help forum that was giving me some advice but it would still crash when I would go to play a game, or even try to run WEI during the Direct 3D assessments. I still think it's shoddy driver installations because I can't boot into normal windows after it crashes which requires me to go into safe mode and use a restore point. The card was running with like a 10% OC over the summer when I was home with no problem and I originally had trouble with the drivers then. I'm thinking a new install of windows would do the trick. But as a side note, have any of you experienced vertical lines on the screen during or after a crash? When mine Blue screens, it gets like a checkerboard design, crashes, and then boots up with like one cluster of vertical lines and then i get it into safe mode and its got a few groups of them going across the screen

I had a 4850. It started to overheat with the 1slot design cooler. I bought Thermalright HR-03 GT which is perfect and actually on my 6850 right now.

I dunno when this started but I needed that cooler on my 6850 awhile back. The problem was when I put the stock cooler on, it did vertical dots(only dots nothing else) and would crash on windows immediately or after 10 mins no matter what. I thought "crap, something went bad, or bent while install/uninstall" I wondered if it was a contact issue / short circuit, so i put the Thermalright back on, NO PROBLEMS, go figure. I switched back and forth to stock cooler a few times, maybe screw pressure. Somehow I also found out that if I use the Thermalright's backplate, the issue wasn't happening. So stock cooler+stock backplate = issues, thermalright or stock cooler + thermalright backplate, no issues. That's as far as I inspected the issue but I HAD to use Thermalright on my 6850 because the stock 6850 cooler went bad.

At last, I just binned the 4850 and got a 5670 instead. 10fps less performance but no extra power required.

If you can afford, it's not worth the headache, just get rid of the thing.

Yeah I hear you, I have an antec cyclone sitting right under it but It's not even used to game anymore. I went home for my spring break and I tried to update the drivers from 11.2 and it started giving me all those issues after that so I have no clue, but my parents use the pc for basic stuff
