Get a nice custom W/C set and maybe if you like a different case that has more space for radiators.

For sure you can then easely O.C that CPU to 4.0 ~ 4.2ghz which is enough with any single GPU.

Iff your still not satisfied then or want to upgrade in the future you will be attleast having a case + W/C set that can handle anything and can be re-used time and time again.

Trust me, a I7-960 overclocked to 4,0ghz or higher together with a GTX680 4GB is really great for gaming thumb.gif

I like this idea, but it would probably cost me near the same amount in watercooling parts and a new case as it would to simply upgrade CPU/RAM/mobo. I also don't like the fact that these high temperatures came from nowhere after years of cool, even performance with this hardware configuration, and that normal fixes aren't doing too much to help it.

I don't think a 960 should need a water loop just to stay below 70C during high loads on stock speeds, so I just think (correct me if I'm wrong) that it points to an underlying problem with the CPU, which would make sense after I've run it into the ground over the years. IF that's the case, I'd rather get an upgrade than do an expensive band-aid (i.e. new cooling system) on hardware that seems to be on its way out.

Given that my problem is gradual temperature increase on my old CPU that it has not exhibited before, and that I've tried re-seating and re-applying thermal paste with little improvement, I think my goal is going to be the mobo/CPU/RAM upgrade. I can wait and space out my purchases to soften the financial blow, but I think it's a worth-while expense rather than waiting for my old CPU to bite the dust. I do not think it should be hitting 70C with an NH-D14 heatsink.

I think I'll stick with the hardware combo that I specified too, since MicroCenter has such a great price on the CPU I like (comparable to the price of the i5 someone recommended), and the next-gen Haswell will not host improvements that really impact me, and will probably cost more being the brand new tech on the market.

I'm also probably going to move the system to a new NZXT Phantom 820 case, since it is so pre-configured for watercooling equipment that I may use in the future.

Thanks for everyone's opinions and advice.

Does anyone have a recommendation on waterblock and radiator companies? It's been a while since I ran watercooling.

i'm not a w/c fanatic. so i can't help. but my advice would be the below
1- buy the cpu off Microcenter
2- buy the mobo off microcenter. You get 50$ off selected motherboards and the UD3H is among them and it's a very well built mobo.
3- Gaming? 8GB of ram with CL9 latency is great a 9-10-9 will be around 60$
4- This case is ugly and all new cases is pre equipped with back rubber grommets for pipes routing and space for upper 240Rad and extreme case a place for 2 240 Rad.

some cases for example: Fractal design, Nzxt , Corsair, Thermal take"although they look ugly" are all well equipped with proper water cooling routes and spaces for top and lower 240 rads.

have fun biggrin.gif

Edit: i couldn't leave without showing some cases

I think your right there, before you buy expensive W/C parts you have to know the cause of this sudden gain in heat.
Otherwise it might just become an expensive band-aid like you said...

Here is a list of a few W/C stores:

Thanks, Farih.

I think the first thing I'll do is switch my current hardware to a new case - as I said, I've been eyeing the NZXT Phantom 820 (http://youtu.be/JdfLmtW92E8) (Matte Black, if it matters). It seems to offer the most room for future experiments and upgrades, and I'm a big fan of the built-in lighting and fan controller.

The Silverstone Raven I've been using is great, but depends on a bottom-to-top cooling air-flow direction, and offers only 1 120mm fan slot at the top for exhaust - all the other fans act as intake. That, and the latch on the front door has broken and been repaired twice now (Silverstone great customer service - free replacement part). This is probably why the RV01 has been discontinued.

After transferring my current internals to the 820, I'll see if I still have any issues with my current hardware's temperatures, and think about upgrading CPU/mobo/RAM from there if need be.

Looking for a bit of advice on fans for water cooling.

Has anyone had any experience with the AeroCool Shark fans? (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835129062) I had 1 blue one that eventually failed on me after a year of hard use - anyone else have any experience with these fans?

I'm going to use a dual-radiator loop in an NZXT Phantom 820 case: triple 120mm rad on the top, dual 140mm rad on the bottom. The 'water flow' will be from reservoir to pump to CPU block to upper triple-120mm top rad to GPU waterblock to the lower dual-140mm radiator back to reservoir. Air-flow will be intake through lower dual-140mm rad fans, a front 200mm intake case fan and a side-panel 200mm intake case fan. Exhaust will be a rear 140mm 'exhaust' fan and the top-mounted triple-120mm rad fans. There is a possibility I will might add additional intake fans through the front 5.25-inch bays.

I'm going to use Prolimatech 140mm Vortex Fan Aluminum Series - Green LED fans for the lower dual-140mm radiator intake fans. (http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=36932)

The 120mm Aerocool green shark fans are the highest CFM I can find in a 120mm LED fan (82.6 CFM). They will be for the upper triple-120mm exhaust radiator. If anyone can provide any other clear or LED 120mm high-CFM fans, I can easily modify them to green as per my case design.

TLDR on the last post: what 120mm high-CFM fans are good for water-cooling radiators? (Preferably with LED's - doesn't matter what color)
