[PCGAMER] Call of Duty “has almost ruined a generation of shooter players,” says Tripwire Interactive

Thread Starter

"Earlier this month I visited Killing Floor and Red Orchestra 2 creator Tripwire Interactive to play Rising Storm, the upcoming standalone expansion to RO2 (look for a preview on Monday). After the demo, Tripwire President John Gibson and I got talking about the state of first-person shooters, and Gibson laid out a detailed criticism about the way Call of Duty “takes individual skill out of the equation.” Gibson also expressed frustration over how difficult it had been trying to design a mode for Red Orchestra 2 that appealed to Call of Duty players."

(I apologize if this is the wrong area for this, and if it is a re-post)

Good read. I think he overstates his main points about Call of Duty a little. But I certainly feel Call of Duty has dumbed down the FPS genre in the same way WoW has dumbed down the MMO genre.

I don't think it's fair to blame CoD for ruining a generation of FPS players. Many times people play games because you can do amazing things that you can't do in real life. Making a game that is super realistic probably isn't ever going to appeal to a large audience.

COD games literally roll off of an assembly line. The packaging changes every year but it's the same old widget. Nothing special or unique about them. No innovation, no ambition, no soul. Perfect for today's gamer who doesn't stop to think what he's consuming.

Disagree with you on that.

I think COD is lamer now but still isnt the only reason new fps suck. I really want a new good FPS to come out.
Only reason I am buying Titan or 7970 is cause games look good and experience is only that anymore. It isnt right that i have to fork over alot of money for a video card to play it correctly. But thats what games are now.

I think Call of Duty deserves most or all of the blame because an uncountable number of FPSes have attempted to copy its business model and gameplay style to appeal to the lowest common denominator in an attempt to make a quick buck. Call of Duty is not super realistic, but it attempts to emulate reality in terms of graphics and gameplay. Call of Duty's campaign is more of an interactive action/war movie than a game, its multiplayer relies more on luck of the draw then on skill and is horribly slowed down compared to games like Doom; Quake; Unreal Tournament; Tribes, and its art style is the same old 255 different shades of brown and green (with the exception of Black Ops II, which has a more noir art style to it).

Ironic article, one of my close friends just built a computer (helped him out) and he insisted he could play with a controller. I told him, if he is going to play online PC gaming his ass is going to bleed. Literally, lil' chunky things. He is all "I'm too good for that, don't worry about it". I don't think their is an understanding of how older games worked. However this isn't JUST call of duty but a lot of problems with the console generation currently.

One of my biggest pet peeves is the sensitivity, controllers are not smooth enough for high sensitivity nor are the games made to do so. A lot of that has to do with them trying to keep smooth frame rates, if you move at a constant and can't go above that you have a higher chance at even frame rates. Computers don't exactly require that, not to mention some of us don't need "smooth" frames (solid 30 without dips). Yeah I love smooth frames but when I do a 180 in a twich, the drop in frames isn't going to be noticed. It usually recovers by then, on top of that my screen is a blur (maps memorized, no need to see). PC gamers grew up with that, I expect that type of instant action. Otherwise it's kind of bs, this sluggish gameplay drives me nuts.

Halo4 has it the worst, I couldn't play online. I'm not used to this whole sit and wait aspect, I have to be out and gunnin or it's no fun. That really isn't a console style, as they have put way too many things to keep people from the run and gun style.

So while their is some meat to this, the developer really leaves out a lot of reasons to hate this gen of first person shooters. I'm not going to give other reasons, I could probably sit all day and think of stuff to say.

sad but true. it's also sad that RO2 has such a small player base for such a great game.

Not just shooters, other genres as well.

The mainstream gamer doesn't have the patience for anything.
