My computer needs help!

Thread Starter
I'm posting a "my computer is crashing and I don't know why" thread here because this is the first PC I've built. Maybe there is something common that happens to new builders that is happening to me that's causing my computer to crash?

First, you'll see my specs in the signature.

The first of these crashes happened on Monday, 3/11, while I was watching a youtube video in Chrome about half an hour after the computer was turned on. The second time happened the next day, also while watching a video in Chrome, about an hour after the computer being on. After that, I did a system restore to the day before the first crash (Sunday the 10th). The third crash happened today 3 and 1/2 hours after the computer being on, this time the computer was merely running Bittorrent.

What's the crash like? The system totally freezes up (everything on the display is there, computer doesn't shut down). Nothing moves. No response. Ctrl+Alt+Del doesn't work. All I can do is reset via a button on the case.

Some back story...Major changes to the system before the crashes started would include: Installed some K-Lite codecs with Windows Media Player Classic on Sunday or Saturday, installed a new heat sink (the Noctua...CPU temps are currently stable, by the way, so no problems there), and that's all that I can think of now. I actually just built the computer on Thursday the 7th, so a pretty new computer overall.

So, my question to you all would be, any ideas of what I should look into? Any software that might aid me? (I'm not used to having computer problems...generally I take really good care of my systems, and know how to make fixes and tweaks when necessary). I'm tempted to do a restore to the day I built the computer (yikes!) if this keeps up.

(I apologize if this is the wrong place for these sorts of questions. Any references to other threads are welcome!)

Thank you everyone!

One more note! When I installed the new heat sink, I had to remove the heat spreaders on the ram to make it fit. The ram chips are unharmed and performance, as far as I can tell, is stable. Everything seems to be in working order.

Go through and make sure everything is connected properly. Re-seat the ram, re-seat the GPU check the all wires are connected correctly etc.... Also reset your bios to standard and see what happens then.

It really sounds like your ram is not seated properly.

Will resetting the BIOS tamper with drivers or anything related to what's going on in the OS? And yes, I'll definitely try messing with the ram. Though, task manager is recognizing both cards....?

Thanks for the tips and the swift reply!

No resetting the BIOS will not change anything with your drivers that I have ever experienced.

I agree with Lshuman on the ram sounds like its not fully seated. Also check every plug like Ls said if one thigh come even a tad lose the entire system will crash or at least my experience has taught me.

Yeah I'll check the ram for sure. And I'll definitely check on each component as well for connections. Though, if the ram isn't fully seated, wouldn't the task manager that monitors ram and cpu usage recognize that properly unseated ram as not being there at all? Like I said, the task manager is recognizing all 16gb

It may be that its seated enough to be recognized but when say your 2TB drive spins up causes enough vibration to cause that connection to be interrupted and the system to crash.

I have had situations where I thought the ram was seated properly and it was still posting like it was and had system hangs.
