CM 690 ii pedestal mod (Project Vertigo) - Page 15

A small side note, the facia frame will be a timber construction. Given the relatively fine dimensions of the components, the main fixing agent will be glue.
I have used Evo contact adhesive extensively in the past but have tried a new glue today as it seemed more suitable; Wickes Mitre bond adhesive.

This seemed OK at first but its strength and consistency have proven highly disappointing. The initial grab was almost identical to the contact adhesive, but the force needed to break the bond was about half and once broken (the packaging suggests the glue is stronger than the timber but far from it), the adhesive was dead where as the contact adhesive retains some grip and has a chance of re-fixing.

Back to the contact adhesive for the rest of the job then.

The fit and finish of the acrylic side panels will be made somewhat more critical with this method but i will simply have to deal with that.

As much as I am drawn to a more faithful replica of the original design, I now think that something with my own touch is the better way to go.

So that's that, unless i change my mind again... tongue.gif

I'm the same, I'm going to mod 1 of my 690 IIs similar to this one and want it to look original outside, just paint behind the mesh black thumb.gif

Yes, most of the case will be painted black, I won't paint anything until all the parts are ready though.

With the size of this thing, I am trying to be restrained with the detailing. The outer case will be mostly plain except for the "chrome" strips which will hopefully have a diffuser which will allow it to glow subtly rather than look like a Christmas tree.

Likewise the interior, will be mostly black paint although I am toying with black di-noc on some areas. The idea is light the gpu loop nvidia green and the cpu loop intel blue and while the interior may be quite strongly lit, the window panels will be smoked grey rather than clear so that should tame the effect down somewhat.

I was originally going with black hose but I have pretty much changed my mind in favour of clear hose now. I will try it first without dye in the hope that the tubing will get enough colour from the lighting, failing that I can add a little blue and green dye to the loops.

My major challenge now is the weather is no good to work outside and I have no workshop so can't cut metalwork at the moment. Either need a miracle patch of good weather (at a suitable time) or find some workshop space to borrow.

A bit more progress, I have 100% set on the facia construction and am ready to start work on it.

Unfortunately, this will involve the use of my router table which I haven't used for years and am somewhat nervous about using! I'm sure everything will be fine and hopefully I will finish with the same quantity of fingers that I start with. wink.gif

Some thoughts on the water cooling side of things.

This is my first attempt at water cooling; it's already been a steep learning curve and I'm sure there will be plenty more by the time this system gets up and running.

The layout of these loops are not ideal in terms of bleeding excess air from the system. I expect that stage to take quit some time and obviously this is not going to be an easy case to tip and shake about!

It occurred to me that there is a good chance that I may run into issues with my first run on these loops so convenient drain ports would be a good idea.
This is easy on the lower loop as the alphacool rads have loads of ports and I have attached a spare length of hose to one of the lowest ports with a blanking plug. This will sit up behind the pump plate and can spin down to feed straight into a bucket when draining.

The upper loop is a bit more difficult, the xspc rads have no additional ports but there is a spare outlet on the resevoir which would be ideal but there is not room to use it without changing the mount position which I don't want to do.
The answer is a T piece replacing one of the 90° currently on the res. Then I can leave another plugged drainage hose tucked away.

A bit of extra work but I think I will be glad of it when it is needed. smile.gif

That's really awesome; when I first saw the pedestal I also thought it looked like another 690 II under it. Always interested in custom work for a 690 II since the case itself is one of my favorites.

Well that's fair as it basically is two 690ii's stacked.

When I first decided to go with more radiator than would comfortably fit in one case 2x360; I decided to use an extra 690ii case to cut down and attempt to merge the finish to make one slightly extended case.
I only stacked the two cases to get an idea of where to cut&shut and while it was there I gaffered as many fans to the front as would fit as it looked ridiculous and posted it as a joke.

However the joke backfired when I realised I actually really liked it this big! Then of course I thought it would need to go way over the top on the water cooling to make sense....

It's been frustrating finding time to work on things but all the other challanges are proving extremely enjoyable. I just hope the end result turns out OK.

Random thought of the day; was the HAF stacker inspired by my build log (I started quite some time before the Stacker release) and if so, would anyone admit to it?

HAF Stacker prototype?
