[GameSpot] PS4 not worth the cost, says Nvidia - Page 23

Why Physx on a console when Havok is available?
Its ligher, and better for lower powered hardware like the PS4.

That is not a game developed on the ps4. Can you stick to the topic and try to understand what I am saying about comparing pc and console hardware?

If it not too much to ask. I know you are just as hurt as Nvidia, but lets put that aside.

Well, apparently it is developed for the PS4 (and is releasing on it first and foremost) and I'm afraid you'll have to refrain from the inflammatory and erroneous remarks if you want to discuss anything.

And I understand perfectly well what you're saying about PC and console hardware, I just don't think it fits the equation anymore since they're now all x86 native. The situation has drastically changed.

In a separate PR statement, Nividia compared the APU to a GTX 680.

Quite a fair comparison, in their opinion.

Well, the PC version is using PhysX and the console one is not. At this time there isn't a GCN accelerated physics library in games. I know it exists in the form of Bullet Physics Engine with OpenCL and it's in use in Blender 3d modelling software.

This is a large part of why Nvidia is not happy about not getting the consoles. Yes they can get PhysX working on the CPU, but it leaves them in an awkward position. Are they going to make PhysX run on GCN PS4 with x86 CPU and then not give that to the PC guys? That defeats the purpose of "you need an Nvidia card for PhysX!"

But if they don't do that, I feel it's just a matter of time before Bullet grows in popularity and we see OpenCL GCN Bullet in games. It doesn't help Sony is also a big backer of Bullet physics and they are making the console.

I wouldn't be surprised if this was a part of the problem for Nvidia. I am quite sure Nvidia would have wanted some licensing fees for PhysX support on an Nvidia GPU inside of PS4, and Sony probably looked at Bullet, which they've used in movies and stuff, and decided that if they went with AMD they could use OpenCL physics on GPU and not having to pay licensing fees as Bullet is FOSS.

Nvidia can try and spin this how they want, but there is going to be damage done to their proprietary technologies. If we see OpenCL Bullet start ending up in games, PhysX would no longer offer any benefit. In fact, it would be far, far worse as it only works with Nvidia GPUs, so there'd be no console support while Bullet would have console support.

I am sure Nvidia knows this. The future of PhysX is not very good. The future of The Way It's Mean To Be Played is not good. They can keep releasing Tegra without turning a profit on it, so I really am not buying the whole "we're not going to make enough off of PS4" thing.

Epic is probably kicking themselves for using PhysX in Unreal Engine 4 and I wouldn't be surprised if PhysX works its way out of UE4 and is replaced with Bullet.

I pretty sure the first xbox is x86 and ran a stripped down version of windows.

I just dont get Nvidia. Yeah PC is always going to have better hardware but you cant go and assume just because the PC can be build with 3970x and 3 x GTX Titan does not mean everyone can buy it. CPU aside PS4 having ~ HD 7870 performance is amazing. Is a GTX680 anough for 1080p right now? I would say yes and so is the HD 7870. With console optimization HD 7870 is plenty for 1080p. Bring games like Crysis 3 which has best graphics and console optimization HD 7870 should have no trouble @ 1080p.
