FX-4170 for $89 :)

As the title says, I'm very pleased to have ordered this little bad boy for quite a low price. I just wanted to hear what you guys think of a price like this, and if it could be considered a good purchase. I had been considering the FX-4300, but that is $139 where I am... I guess the saved amount can be spent on some nice cooling for some decent OC! biggrin.gif

Now I'm going to be pairing the FX-4170 with an ASRock 970 Extreme3, just wondering how high an overclock I can squeeze out of the FX-4170? I'd appreciate some help from some AMD overclockers around here. How high can I take it with a CM Hyper 212 EVO?

EDIT: As far as usage goes, I'm going to be doing some gaming with my Sapphire 6850, and an equal (if not more) amount of time doing video editing / rendering / encoding.

You have made a bad decision my friend. Bulldozer is a terrible architecture (no matter how much the fanboys try to defend it), you should have spent the extra money on the fx 4300.

But to answer your question about 4.5-4.7 should be attainable.

From the reviews I've seen the FX-4170 is neck-in-neck with the FX-4300 in most situations. I think it's mostly due to the fact that the FX-4170 has 8mb L3 Cache while the FX-4300 only has 4mb L3 cache.

Yep, didn't see the justification in paying the extra $50 for the FX-4300, being overpriced where I am. Its satisfying to know that AM3+ is staying around for some time. I've heard Steamroller is sticking to AM3+, what about Excavator? Few years from now I can get myself a decent and very affordable CPU, all without having to change the motherboard.

Suprisingly, even this intel fanboy hopes that, I want Intel to get the kick in the butt to finish Haswell. And if it turns out to be better then Haswell, well then I have a cheaper CPU to buy biggrin.gif

Just to put things in perspective here, we're talking about a particular price point. An FX-4170 will never compete with an i5-3570K in any way. But I'm getting the CPU for 1 / 3 of the price of an i5-3570K. And for $89, I would favour an FX-4170 over one of these:

Just interested in knowing, what is the difference between the FX-4100 and the FX-4170? Is it just the clock speeds? Is the FX-4170 simply a factory-overclocked FX-4100, or is it a better binned CPU? Can I get higher OC on the FX-4170 over the FX-4100?

It might be better binned, but there shouldn't be much of a difference, you will most likely hit 4.5+
