Second Opinion on some desk renders

Hey,

I was wondering what you guys thought of my designs for a new desk. I will be using 1-2 monitors and my tower will sit on top of the drawer unit.

I don't know what I should build it out of, though. I was thinking a combination of MDF and plywood. 2" MDF for the desktop and 1" plywood or MDF for the remaining support structure, then plywood for the smaller pieces. Thoughts? I am going to give it a dark/black wood grain finish, similar to what some Ikea furniture looks like, with a bright glossy white top and white drawers.

Is it hard to lacquer stuff at home? I have a workshop in a detached garage, so space isn't an issue, but I've never done it before. I would love to lacquer the desk top white if possible.

This is the first time I've used SketchUp, so I hope I did okay..smile.gif

The cut out on the desk top is for cables, same with the hole in the one leg (only visible from the back). The little piece of wood beside the hole, next to the shelves, is to help hide cables. Lastly, the thing at the back on the bottom is a power bar I intend to mount to the desk. There is a small gap between the power bar mount and the floor for the cables to be shoved underneath the drawer unit. If I have to, I will add a cover to the front side of the unit to hide these cables.

Is there any obvious features I am not including, that I should include? I figured cable management was the biggest thing to worry about.

I think it looks great, maybe wan't to put away the little middle board on the left so a computer can fit in there? rolleyes.gif

How about a power strip (w/on-off) mounted somewhere.

I found that an (industrial) strip mounted under the desk makes plug management easier.

Thanks!

I need the shelf space for binders and textbooks for school. That's actually why I included shelves and didn't just make it all a drawer unit. The middle shelf will be adjustable/removable though, so I could put a tower in there if I wanted to.

I have one, mounted at the back underneath all the drawers. It's the bit with all the circles in the last picture. I even drew in the the on/off switch haha, but it's pretty small in the render. If that isn't what you're talking about though, care to elaborate?

Thanks! I spent a couple hours looking at desks online, and then just took all the ideas I liked and put it into one. Pretty simple, but it'll be functional.
