Cables. Dear god the cables are everywhere. Someone please kill me now.

Next time I think I'm going to just make my own cables from scratch so they are all the exact length needed because trying to figure out how to manage this cluster the most efficiently is driving me insane.

I did that with my build, it takes a long long time! But in my opinion, it is well worth it in the end!!!

Speaking of wiring..... DAMMIT CORSAIR!

So the nice shiny AX850 I picked up for this build has a major issue that was unexpected. Take a look at this diagram:

"Boxed in green you will notice two different pin layouts on the PSU, an 8 pin and two 12 pin plugs. The 8 pin plug is designed only for the EPS 12v connector where the other two 12 pins are used for the PCI-E connectors."

The problem is that both the EPS cable that came with the power supply and in the sleeved kit from Corsair use a 12-pin connector housing on the PSU side (just like the PCI-E cables) with the last 4 pinouts empty:

Why does that bug you man?
Because it means right now I can only run 1 vid card on PCI-E since the other PCI-e 12pin would be used by the CPU connector.

But wait dude! Can't you just cut off the 4 empty pinouts (and the retention clip which wouldn't line up), make that sucker an 8-pin EPS housing and git er done??

No. Because Corsair uses a non-standard connector housing shape on their PSUs. And the pinouts wouldn't fit.

That seems really stupid. Would they do that on purpose?
Maybe not. According to the contents of the sleeved PSU kit, I should have both the 12 and the 8 pin cable.
  • One (1) ATX Main Mother Board Power Connector 24 pin (20+4) Individually Sleeved Modular Cable, White
  • One (1) EPS/ATX 12V Power Processor Connector 8 pin (4+4 split, 8pin PSU mating connector) Individually Sleeved Modular Cable, White
  • One (1) EPS/ATX 12V Power Processor Connector 8 pin (4+4 split, 12pin PSU mating connector) Individually Sleeved Modular Cable, White
  • Two (2) PCI-Express Connector 8 pin (6+2 split) Individually Sleeved Modular Cable, White

My package (which I ordered directly from Corsair) did not contain the 8pin PSU mating connector.

*sigh*

EXACTLY! in fact, I may go back and do this anyway. Right now I just want to get it up and running so I can test for leaks, burn in the chips, etc etc.

Hrm, a spool of 18 and 16 gauge wires.. did you use 20/22 for your own USB mobo connectors/smaller wire runs?

Just took a closer look at your build images. I really love the wiring job you did! I'm curious why you went with the punch down post for the wiring (back side up near drive trays). Was there a specific reason for this approach?

Also, the only thing I'd say is... please move that PCI-E power cable. Route it up from the hole at mobo base plate instead of out of the tube hole. Them cables get in the way of all that pretty biggrin.gif

Bummer.

I fixed the power supply plug issue with some ingenuity, exacto blade, and spare dead PSU's I had lying around. Began the fill and leak testing. Things appeared to be going fairly well. Pump was doing its thing and all was progressing as it should. Though it did seem rather low flow, I chalked that up to there being nothing hooked on the pwm 4-pin monitor/controller cable to change speed during testing (plan on using the CPU_FAN1 and software to control pump speed as opposed to fan controller). No strange sounds etc. Once I determined there wasn't any gigantic leakage, I let it sit and pump away for long-term leak testing.

When I came back about 4 hours later there was no pump flow. At all. After some testing, including voltage testing the power line [pump was getting power] and tearing down the pump to determine if there was blockage, it appears that the pump decided to kill itself. Or go on strike. When cycling power on, from watching the water level in the reservoir you can see it makes a half-hearted attempt at moving water but then stops almost immediately. And because I took the pump apart to sleeve the cables I voided the warranty. Lovely.

Time to buy another pump. Grrr.

We are making an exception in this case and issuing an RMA for the pump. As many of you may know once the Warranty Void if Removed sticker has been removed we are not supposed to issue an RMA for these pumps. This is an amazing looking build so far and I can't wait to see how it turns out.
