You can replace the name of the website with the ip address to determine if that is what it is. If you can connect to the ip address then I would say it probably is dns related, which you can just restart the service if you wanted. If you can't connect to the ip address either, then it is probably some other connection issue.

My understanding is that ubuntu (and its variants) use dnsmasq, with caching disabled by default. So unless you've enabled it, It's unlikely to be the cache that is the problem. As stated above are you able to nslookup and traceroute to the server you are trying to access? What are the results?

don't bother with connecting if you want to test

ping -c4 IP

or

ping -c4 DNS-name

You can figure out the problem by which one succeeds. If neither succeed, you have a network error.

[edit]

If you really want to flush the networking, I believe debian based distributions use:

sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

That restarts networking, everything. The articles that tell you to use nscd are bullox. nscd doesn't cache dns if it's not installed, how can it? I'm going to say with the above, your dns is probably fine and not being cached.

Are you hosting the site and just pointing the DNS to your home or is it all hosted elsewhere?

[edit] Crap, yeah I can see it fine.

[errr]

Try this on your linux box:

ping -c4 174.132.162.154

If that doesn't work, something's botched.

Can you ping the DNS name too? And you didn't answer, are you hosting yourself? I ask because if you are, some server setups (yes HTTP too) can block the host from seeing itself.

[edit] As I said earlier, this is how you know. If you can ping the IP and not the DNS name, it's a DNS issue.
