EVGA GTX680 SC SLi issues

Thread Starter
Hello, been reading this site for ages, figured I would sign up and ask here about a problem I am currently having with my gaming rig. I built my PC a few months ago with a single GTX680, but once tax season came, I had enough to finally get a second, so I picked up a 2nd card to run in SLi.

I have had a ton of issues with stability ever since setting up SLi on my PC. When I load a game up, it starts off fine. My frame rates are a thing of beauty, but after a few minutes things fall apart. I am plagued by frame rate dips. For example, in Tomb Raider my frame rate is normally always capped at 60hz (max refresh rate on my 60" plasma). After a few minutes of gameplay however my fps drops to a horrid unplayable 10-15fps. I tried with lower settings and I still have issues with frame rate drops. This isn't with just Tomb Raider either, I have this problem in almost every game now. I did notice that if I pause the game for a few minutes and return, the frame rates become stable for a minute, then drop again.

My PC specs are listed in my sig.

Things I have already tried:
Returned all cpu/gpu/ram timings to stock - no effect (returned back to OC'd settings after)
Downloaded NV Inspector and tried forcing AF1/2 and a ton of different settings.
My current drivers are the latest Beta drivers.
I disabled each card and tried 1 card at a time; No issues at all when only one card is active.
I tried enabling K-Boost on each card, then re-enabled SLi to try and see if forcing max clock rates would prevent the fps drop, but no luck there.
Tried using a different SLi bridge, made no difference.

My GPU temps are fine, so I don't think it is a thermal issue.
At full load GPU1 runs at 65-68c and GPU2 stays at around 50-60c. Both cards idle at about 32c. I have no BSOD's, crashes or any types of errors.

At this point I am running out of ideas to try and am open up to suggestions. If you have any ideas I could try I would greatly appreciate it.

In EVGA OC Scanner's stress test I am getting 90+% utilization from each card at 110-115% TDP with no issues.
During actual gaming it ranges from about 35-70% depending on the game/settings. Right now I am running with KBoost active, which theoretically should keep the clocks from major down clocking. Doesn't make any difference in frame rate drops though sadly, so I am going to just disable it soon.

Anyway, did some searching and this is what I found...

"Attached to only four PCIe 2.0 lanes, the center black slot is not intended for CrossFire or SLI. It can still host a fourth (single-slot) graphics card for added displays or PhysX calculations, even as the other slots are used in a three-way configuration. Some users might even want to place a high-performance drive controller there.

Asus proclaims quad-GPU SLI support, referencing a pair of dual-GPU GeForce GTX 590s. In fact, that arrangement is supported by all SLI-capable motherboards. Our problem with the quad-GPU terminology is that it almost appears to be an attempt to confuse neophytes into believing this four-slot board will take four cards working cooperatively. Asus clearly indicates on Page 2-16 of its manual that this is a triple-card SLI design, though."

The 110+% TDP is when it is overclocked. maxes out at 100% when stock (as it should lol)
I have my cards installed in PCI slots 1 & 3, which is what is recommended by Asus.
My PSU is a Rosewell Capstone 750 watt SLi gold certified. It powers my system perfectly. My case fans are all 80-140CFM A/C powered so they draw no power from my PSU. 750 isn't a huge amount of power, but even with everything overclocked and overvoltaged it handles the system well even during burn in tests.

EDIT: BIOS is up to date.

have you tried each card individually? First card is good, try it in slot 3 solo? Try using slot 1 & 4? Anyway, eliminate either a bad card or board slot.

Thread Starter
I disabled SLi and tried each card independently from one each other, leaving them in their current slot. Both cards work flawlessly when used by themselves and both slots work fine.

Another thing I noticed is that the frame drops tend to happen when the card reaches about 65c. Allowing the card to cool for a minute restores the frame rate for about a minute, then the fps drops again. Do these cards throttle back when they reach a preset temperature? Or is the temp probably unrelated?
