Not in my experience,I have had a 12v D5 on a Lamptron FC5 for nearly 2 years in my bench and for another year in another rig in the same setup.
No problems to report in either instance,RPM control is good with very little variation.

Could be because Lamptron uses PWM for their fan controllers. Your D5 was seeing full voltage.

My D5 using a Sunbeam Rheobus made undesirable sounds at most settings below 12V. The control range was pretty limited too, it was more like an on-off switch.

The pumps were only noticeable because they were changing speed all the time.
If you have a 655 I think its better to just use the dial to pick a nice quiet setting that gives enough flow and leave it alone. Adjusting pump speed doesn't give anywhere near the results of controlling fan speeds based on load anyway.
If that is what you want it for that is.

As an owner of 7 D5 pumps in various systems, both variable speed and fixed speed ones, I agree with this 100%.

Nope, the FC5 doesn't have any PWM function at all.

I also agree with the comment about variable pump control,I tend to set the pumps at the most pleasing note (depending on loop requirements).
Why would you need to adjust flow when you are looking for the most flow possible is counter intuitive.

Lamptron uses PWM (Not signalling, but actual output) for their voltage control. They're not using a linear regulator like Sunbeam often does.

That's why their controllers have little to no heatsinking on them.

I think you may both be right. There are two versions of the FC5. It may be that V1 was analogue and V2 is PWM. I don't see any heat sinks in the pictures of the V2.

This is not definitive, I just think it may be true from what I can find from a quick search on the internet.

Not all their controllers have the same method of control, the FC9 is one of their controllers that doesn't play well with pumps and tach.

The FC5 is not PWM.

The difference between the v1 and v2 is the display, they improved it greatly and added colours.
Also,if I remember correctly, the FC5 can display the voltage per channel,I will check my 3 if this is the case.

Tthe FC5 is PWM based. The link you posted is talking about PWM signalling for fans with 4 pins, nothing at all related to actually driving a fans power pins with a PWM power signal.

You're confusing PWM signalling (4-pin fan connctor), with driving a fan's power connectors with PWM directly.

If you have a PWM signal (square wave), you can still display a DC measurement. It's simply the duty cycle % times the peak output, i.e. it's the average.

There is simply no other affordable way they could handle 30W per channel with no heatsinking if they weren't using PWM.

I'm not, there is no evidence to support your theory, there are heatsinks on the FC5 mosfets and It gets rather toasty.
If you can provide proof then I will be happy to reverse my opinion but I can't find anything to support you.
I'm talking with the Lamptron rep on Skype as we speak ( One advantage of being sponsored by them),maybe he can back you up.

Excellent! I stand corrected. +rep.

both of mine have little black stamped metal heatsinks on the gets, when im back from work I will pic them for you.
