[gameranx] SimCity Reviews Paint a Grim Picture of the Future’s Meaningless Game Reviews

When the average player experience and the pre-launch reviewer experience become so distant from each other, reviews become a meaningless exercise in critiquing a game that will never exist as a consumer product.

Source

For a very long time now I have made it a point to not even pay attention to the rating that games get before or near the launch of any particular game because of how the reviewers who get advanced copies are so tightly controlled. I usually wait for a decent amount of actual gamers to have said their piece on forums and see the metacritic user score. This article really shows how ridiculous things are today and hits the nail on the head.

Most journalists receive incentives, few can keep those incentives from altering their emotional perspective. That emotional perspective always finds it's way into their writings, skewing reviews. It's why I never listen to a professional review unless the person pays out of pocket for a product, plain and simple.

Not to mention, most "processional" journalists are... I've been taught journalism and how to do "proper" articles in college, needless to say the teacher was full of brown goo and the methods of writing were awful. I passed the class by doing my papers the day before they were do, all in under 6 hours. Does that tell you something about the state of journalism?

I went to a great talk at our university the other month and one of the topics is how journalism is dead. It was pretty sad and very true.

Good read... Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Above all, however, the broader solution is to not let publishers dictate the conditions under which games are reviewed. However reviews are to be done, they must be done in a way that accurately reflects the actual product available to regular players, and not the publisher’s (or developer’s) ideal vision of what the finished product should look like.

I've always just assumed most reviews are paid for in the marketing budgets, so I stopped looking at reviews years ago.

Honest journalism is, all you get now is highschool students writing opinion papers and reporting them as "good journalism". The media killed journalism at it's finest. I don't even know where to start and where to end with the problems. Grammar, spelling, non-factual reporting as factual, the list goes on. It's why I refuse to read any article in the news section and take it as is. You actually have to go and research yourself to even know the truth behind the article. What is even worse, world wide people eat the crap up and take it as is. Then they talk about it to other people, without a lick of sense about the subject. An example of how that happens is....

The other week I was talking to friends, told them that back in HS I dated this chick who worked at a restaurant. Her boss got this brick oven for pizza, because they wanted it for specific pizzas. I was told it does 1200F, they laughed at me because everything they have been told says you cannot do that. However:

http://www.grimaldis.net/aboutus.html

Now this isn't exactly journalism related, it does show how people have learned to just take information as is and then use it as if they know the information. Food is cooked at X, you cannot go to a certain temp because it will burn. We have been learned to listen to "professionals", regardless of their knowledge or expertise. I also told the guy that the shuttle craft doesn't use "bricks", they are tiles but that was another argument. Needless to say, they use tiles (ceramic/silicone based if anyone wants to know). Why do I know this? Because instead of taking articles as is, I will actually go read the a subject until I get the answer. The problem is, people won't. I find it SAD too and how they teach journalists.... I won't go their, needless to say after learning how things are taught I came to one conclusion:

In order for proper journalism to work, they should not be able to professionally write about a subject without a degree in it. If not, it shouldn't be allowed in any professional setting. A journalist for games? Should take programming and software design. Hardware journalism? Engineers. Ect...

It's the new version of advertising. We're in an age where people don't believe what they see in commercials and on billboards because we're smart enough to know it's hyped up rubbish. Doesn't mean a manufacturer is going to give up promoting its product. Eventually the consumer will realize that these "reviews" aren't actually reviews but simply the current form of advertisement and we'll find ourselves in a new generation of advertising using some other means.

Evolution baby.

I normally have a look for some let's play video's, it gives you a better idea of what the game is like. The thing with any review it's based on someones opinion and if they are not into that type of game then the reviewer isn't going to give it a fair review compaed to other games of that type as he/she doesn't play them. imo
I remember goig through the paper to see what films were on and the reviewer had given 1 film a 4 stars and another 1 star yet the 4* I had watch all of 10 minutes b4 switching it over the 1* I thought was a great film, which is the 1 I watched

I would take argument with what you have to say. I think that a huge crowd of people buy into the marketing and the hugely inflated, producer controlled scores.

I mean look at the pre-orders of these new games that are drivel to older gamer's standards - it is quite amazing.

EDIT: Whoa why did this get moved from news?
