Need help building a nice gaming rig

Thread Starter
Hey, my friend is about to build a nice gaming PC, but we aren't quite sure which components to choose.

Here are some requirements:
  • It will be used for gaming
  • The case should be a full tower / medium tower with good airflow, space and easy accessibility is not a requirement, but I guess it would be cool.
  • Price: Around $1000 - $1320
  • He already has: Mouse, keyboard and monitor - where the monitor is a 1920x1080 monitor (just so you know what GPU to choose)
  • He wants to be able to play the newest games on great graphics. Will it be able to run Crysis 3 on almost best graphics for this price?`
  • SSD: 120GB - 256GB (whatever can be afforded - it should be a fast and reliable one)
  • Should be good for the longest time possible = no need for upgrades soon after purchase
  • It will be most likely be purchased from Denmark, or maybe England or Germany.
  • I'm not sure if there's anything else you need to know, but if there is, please ask.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Mathias

EDIT: I already have the OS, so it should not be included.

Here's some general thoughts to get you started.
Crysis 3 at max settings is doable at that price I believe. Most important will be the graphics card - For the crysis requirement, I would suggest you need at least a Radeon HD 7950 or a GTX 670. The 7950 tends to be the better value of the two. The processor needs to be either an i5-2500K or i5-3570K (quite similar performance, 3570K say 10% faster but potentially more expensive (however a 2500K may not be easily available)). An i7-3770K would be great, but that doesn't particularly help for gaming and might stretch the budget a bit. The motherboard needs to be either an updated Z68 or just a Z77 (Z68 can work for either processor, but Z77 is preferable). Post in the motherboard section for specific recommendations.

For storage, a 256gb SSD will probably not be in the budget, but a 128 will do nicely. Some of the best ones currently are the Samsung 840 Pro, OCz Vector, the Intel 520, and many others. A good reliable budget SSD is the Crucial M4.

For the chassis, that is so much up to personal preference. I am fond of the Nzxt Phantom line (ranging from the $100 Phantom 410 to the $250 Phantom 820), but I know people will disagree. Check out some chassis reviews here for some ideas http://anandtech.com/tag/casecoolingpsus

Good luck!

I am not sure about the prices in England or anywhere else in the EU. However, I would suggest to look out for these parts or something similar to them

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/K0fX

In USD, its about $1200.

Your friend can easily get a decent Crysis 3 system in that budget. The most important element is going to be the graphics card. NVIDIA recently optimized their drivers for Crysis 3, claiming huge performance improvements in the 314.07 release, so that's something to consider when looking at video card benchmarks for that title. They claim up to 65% improvement in Crysis 3 specifically. That might tip the scale in favor of the GTX 670 or GTX 680 over a 7870 or 7970.

If your friend has NO PLAN to go higher than Dual SLI or Crossfire in the future, then you can size the system a little bit smaller in the power supply, case/cooling, and motherboard selection. Here are some general recommendations:

ASUS P8Z77-V Motherboard $184
Intel i7-3570K $219
Cooler Master HAF XM Case $119
Corsair CX600 Power Supply $69
EVGA 02G-P4-2685-KR GTX 680 2GB w/Backplate $479
LG DVD+R rewriter $18
Crucial Ballistix Tactical Tracer BLT2KIT4G3D1869DT2T 8GB kit (2x4 GB, DDR3-1866 CL9, 1.5v) $76

You're at $1164 with current Newegg prices, with no monitor, keyboard, mouse, operating system license, etc. That leaves about $150 to select some kind of storage option. You could get a nice 120GB SSD in that price range, or two 1TB 7200 RPM drives, or a 2TB 7200 RPM drive. Bigger, faster SSD is probably out of the question unless you stretch the budget a little more. I'd consider SSD non-essential if your friend isn't used to blistering fast boot times, etc.

EDIT: By the way, I already have Windows 8, so OS should not be included.

So far I'm buying from CaseKing.de and Komplett.dk.

This is my cart ($1293.5)

Case: Haf 912 $98
CPU: i5-3570k $245.5
SSD: Corsair Force GS 128GB $148.5
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo $39
RAM: 2x Corsair Vengeance LP Series 4GB (8GB total) $71.5
Motherboard: Asus P8Z77-V LXZ77 $130.5
GPU: EVGA GTX 670 FTW 2GB $446
PSU: Corsair CX600M $88.5
Optical Drive: LiteOn iHAS124 R/W $26

Total: $1293.5

Which is a bit expensive, because the prices in Europe are pretty expensive.

Are there any components I could change to save money but without losing a noticeable amount of performance?

There are better cases for the money, that is not exactly a new case. That RAM is a waste of money, all RAM that costs more than Samsung green is pretty much a waste of money. You can get more for less with a 7970. Rest looks fine. GL!

Which is a bit expensive, because the prices in Europe are pretty expensive.

Are there any components I could change to save money but without losing a noticeable amount of performance?

you can change the videocard to HD7970 which is equivalent to gtx 680, for higher performance at less cost. You can change the ssd to other cheaper sandforce 2281 equivalent or get a crucial M4. The mobo & psu are limited to single gpu configuration, better get a cheapest asus z77 & lowest price 500W true rated unit 80% eff. would still be fine, just check the required available pcie power cables before buying.
