going to eyefinity 3x1 120hz 7970 - questions

Thread Starter
Eh, so I had this awesome idea to do a 5x1 eyefinity setup, but I hadn't thoroughly educated myself. My thoughts were a bit skewed by my nvidia knowledge. I wasn't aware at the time that I couldn't span outputs across multiple cards.

So the reference 7970 card I picked up, wouldn't support the end goal. I did some looking, and noticed my choice really was limited if I wanted to do anything really crazy with 5x1. I slept on it, and decided that 5x1 was just a money pit and 3x1 seemed more realistic.

Ok, now for the questions... some of these seem obvious, but I'd like to get a feel for things outside of my madness.

I am feeding an HP z2740w with two nvidia 8800gts 640mb cards. Am I shooting myself in the foot if I drop the 2740 and go with something like 3 VG248QE's flipped to portrait? The z2740w is an awesome monitor, and the quality is top notch... but at 700 a pop, adding two more hurts.

Using 3 1920x1080 monitors, are frame rates above 80fps attainable with less than 4 cards (providing the game supports it)?

Providing I remove the bezels, are the lines annoying as I'd be afraid of?

Am I getting suckered in by hype, and has living with outdated video cards just made the koolaid look a little too good?

Sorry, I struggled where to ask. I am more familiar with nvidia, but I chose amd because their multi-monitor solutions were a bit more mature and I plan to use the GPU's for WCG in their downtime.

Well make sure you have very good ventilation in your chassis, despite having a CM Storm stryker and two 7970 in crossfire non reference cooler, my top card got really hot and throttled, even though gou usage wasnt 99%. Read my thread for additonal information.

5 monitor output from a reference 7970 should work perfectly well (you might need a dual link dvi adapter though).

Anyway, the Asus VG248QE looks like a very nice monitor for this kind of setup. You'll still have your nice HP, so you could re-purpose it for some other work. That Asus looks like it has a small bezel (even without modding) so that won't bother you I don't think. The lines are there, but that isn't a reason to not have an eyefinity setup.

For 3 monitors at 80+ fps, two or three cards will do nicely!

That may be it, although I'd also consider it a good idea to wait to see how the oculus rift pans out, as it may very well replace the need for massive display arrays if you're going to get the same (or better) feeling in regards to immersion into games.

That aside, I was thinking about a five monitor setup, but the cost (even for a three monitor setup) and the excess non-display space would drive me insane.

Yeah, no love here for wearable monitors... Corrective lenses pretty much ruin that. The same goes for 3d, which is a massive downer because for the 10 seconds before my head started to hurt, COD black ops was awesome in 3d. It felt like someone had suction cups attached to my eyeballs.

I've been putting off upgrades for a pretty long time, playing the "well something new will be around the corner". To be honest, I think I have mentally bought 5 different video cards in the last 4 years.
