[AI]Apple now offering iMacs with built-in VESA mount adapters for $40 premium - Page 11

Truth be told, I don't really look at Apple computers much, and the biggest surprise to me in this whole thread is that the iMac doesn't ALREADY have 4 threaded VESA holes on the back ... like just about every other non-Apple monitor our there, and many of the "all-in-one" PC's from HP, etc. If Apple had done that, it would have only added like $1 to the cost of the iMac (if that).

The first of a few nicely written posts, that were met with nerdrage to the extreme. Also was funny how very little people tried to converse with the guy, but so many jumped to call him for crying. The maturity in this thread is pretty low.

Both sides of the fence in this thread are acting quite childish with a few people trying to have a proper dialog in the middle but getting nowhere.

Apple "fans" claim that "haters" will cry and bash Apple for anything and everything.
Apple "haters" claim that "fans" will hug and kiss Apple for anything and everything.

Yet both sides of this extreme spectrum will insult the other and put them down.

Pot, meet kettle.

If someone posts something you dislike, either get involved in the conversation in a constructive way, or ignore it. If its offensive or rude, or simply trolling or baiting, you can ignore and report. But the nonsense going on in this thread is sad. Grow up people.

I personally gotta agree for the most part with 47 Knuckle to be honest. If this was something planned from the get-go it wouldn't cost much, if anything, especially since they don't supply the stand. At the end of the day, the costs and savings should be close to factoring each other out. I can't see how $40 is in any way justifiable on this one...

So do they mean this doesn't even come with a way to be supported out of the box without additional supplies? (that cost more) And I'll clarify, this is a serious question, not a bait, or slanted insult or anything, so don't get offended so quickly. Feel like I gotta say that just to not get flamed for peoples imagination/insanity these days...

It's threads like these that reminds me why I don't post nearly as often on OCN as I used to... so much drama, so much bias, so much animosity...

it's probably not justifiable in terms of the cost to produce. doesn't change the fact that $40 is chump change and the only reason people are even discussing it is because it is an apple product. especially considering the cost of an imac and the amount of money people spend on rigs here.

See, I just was just trying to work out why it would cost $40 extra. And I was attacked for "bashing" Apple (Although Knuckle got it a lot worse).

I am an engineer, it is in my nature to question why things are. I couldn't really find a good reason in my head so I asked the question. Then based on the replies I gave up before the end of the first page.

Non of the things mentioned in this thread could explain why, if they are mass producing this part, it would cost $40 more than the version with a stand. Engineering hours, manufacturing, material cost, warehousing, sales and marketing, shipping, customs etc. could apply equally to both the stand and the VESA mount options.

If Apple value this feature at $40 so be it. It is a resonable price for the feature and I am not crying, moaning, complaining or any of the other things I have been accused of.

OCN, I expected more.

maybe they assumed you were crying or bashing given that:

1. $40 is just not a lot of money in the us no matter how you cut it, just taking into account the current cost of living. heck if you live in a large city you might spend that much on parking every week
2. the price of an item rarely reflects the actual manufacturing cost, for any given item. unless you do all your shopping at walmart. that's just the way it goes for pretty much everything. heck look at the profit margin for high end smartphones, samsung and apple make several hundred per device. granted there are a lot of r&d costs but still
3. you're a member of a computer performance site where people spend thousands on hardware mostly as a hobby/toy for gaming, yet feel the need to complain about a $40 accessory

^ I see a lot of budget builds well under $700 here, just saying. $40 is a good chunk of that kind of price.

$40 can be a lot for anyone on a ultra strict budget, meh. thumb.gif

1. The amount is not important, it could be $0.40 or $4000 for all I care, I was interested in the reason for the amount

2. I know that, I work in the manufacturing industry. However if we are producing two comparable items and one is more expensive than the other there will be a reason for it - either due to cost of manufacture, bill of materials or licensing / customs / anything else.

3. So I am judged based on other's actions? Great. Nice job guys thumb.gif

I guess it is easier to attack the questioner than answer the question.

Edit: Again, if Apple have decided that this feature is worth $40 then that is fine. If I were in the market for an AIO that would be mounted on a swivel arm or a wall then I would be happy to pay a nominal amount for that feature. I would still like to know why.

Heck I have been on the phone today with a vendor asking why a slight change to our drawing has resulted in an extra $10,000 to the price. On a $2.3m order. We don't really care about the amount, it is nothing, we care about the reason.

I guess it is easier to attack the messenger than deal with the message.

Dangerous waters when Apple is included in this type of forum but I know where you're coming from.

Because the mount will only be sold to a small niche market compared to the stand. It's called economies of scale. Not to mention, it falls into a small disposable income price range, where items are typically marked up much higher, especially when there's not really a competing product.

Starting to make sense yet?

At the end of the day, who the hell cares about a $40 mount.

$40 can hardly buy a new CPU. You would be lucky to get a relatively new (1 year old) dual core CPU for $40. Besides, I hardly believe a $1300 AIO is a budget computer, if someone can afford to spend $1300 on a computer, then $40 is nothing to them.
