I'm with Knuckle on this one. Every monitor should have vesa compatibility strati out of the box. I hate that samsung didn't have it on the SyncMaster SA550 as they tired to do the whole sleek and sexy back side that no one is going to be looking at.

While there is some cost like what Knuckle listed as well as the initial retooling cost the $40 is still way, way more then the cost to Apple. Its just apple taking a premium price for what should be on there from the start. Its just apple being apple though I will give them props for actually going against there "sleek lines" and using standard mounting distances and threads.

It's simple.

Comments like thees are just silly. Why on earth would anyone do something that so obviously would not be profitable. Just because a company making just VESA mounts for the iMac, sell them for $35 would fail does not change the fact that apple is charging a high premium for the mount.

I've started 2 companies before, it's not difficult thumb.gif

There is a huge difference between PROPERLY PLANNING to add 4 holes and 4 Pem inserts into a product WHEN IT WAS DESIGNED and making an after market adapter plate to correct your original shortsightedness.

If you can't see that, then you are TOTALLY lost in your method of thinking.

If Apple had added the VESA mounting holes WHEN THE iMac WAS DESIGNED, it would have cost them less than a dollar ... BUT THEY DIDN'T ... so now it costs the buyer $40.

Is that clear enough for you?

Dude, you're seriously still whining about $40 on a product you're clearly not going to buy? $40 is negligible to anyone buying an iMac. and that's the bottom line. Let it go and move on.

One of the main selling points of the iMac (like pretty much all Apple products) is for looks.

That's what it would look like if it had VESA mounting points in the design, but if people didn't want to use the mounting points.

Furthermore, you are crying about something you aren't going to buy. That's worse than crying over spilt milk.

You're right. I should stop trying to educate Apple users on the difference between the costs involved if Apple had properly planned their product as opposed to paying through the nose by the end user for the lack of that proper planning. Apparently some people on this thread are just too far gone to be educated.

Nice exaguration of the M4 holes. Look at what you drew up and compare the 4mm hole to that of the all the other holes on the back of the case (ie the USB ports). Once again, you are being silly. Not to mention, like many other designs, you can put "plugs" in the hold that are color matched to hide the holes when they aren't being used.

The cheapest iMac is $1299. If someone is going to spend at least $1299 on a computer then $40 would be the sort of money they find down the back of the sofa.

That's one way of doing it. They could have done it like dell or they could just have color matched plugs that cover up the holes.

They could have, but it still would have looked terrible because they would have needed a large lump of metal. If they went with plugs to cover up the holes, it would have looked terrible as well. Like parking sensors on cars.

Ahh but this is Apple we are talking about even if you say it would look ugly the masses would not even notice it unless pointed out and even then like I sad, its Apple and as we know they can't do any wrong in terms of design.

Honestly even if Apple had come out with just the raw thread holes, how many Apple buyer do you think would have complained?

Wow. High horse much? As if you imply you're a better designer than the folks at Apple??? Or that you're aware of their design process and/or supply chain economics for the iMac?

I don't think you're trying to educate anyone, you're merely whining for the sake of whining because it's an Apple product. There are few Apple users here to educate after all . Furthermore, if someone wants to buy the the iMac with a VESA mount, what the heck do you care?? Let it go before you have a stroke. You're not convincing anyone of anything here.
