Setting up a sub

Thread Starter
Hi,

I need some help setting up a sub I got for a 2.1 setup. The subwoofer I bought doesn't have LFE input so I have to use the two RCA inputs intead. My receiver has the "audio out" RCA ports which everyone says you need to use with the two RCA cables. My problem is, I am getting sound from the sub, but I cant control the sub AT ALL with my receiver. When I turn my receiver volume down, the sub still keeps playing. I have been playing around with settings (ie. setting front speakers to large) all morning but cant give myself control over the sub. I can control the sub with its controls in the back obviously, but I dont want to have to constantly go back there to adjust my volume. I cant find anything in the manuals....

Heres the equipment:

Receiver: SONY STR-DH500 (With speaker cable direct to the two speakers, and then two RCA outs to the sub)

Speakers: Polk 35B

Sub: Polk PSW10

I know I could try running speaker cable from the receiver to the sub, and then to the speakers but I really want to keep away from that for now...

Thanks for any help....

Once you get the subwoofer dialed in on the integrated amplifier you wont have to constantly get up to adjust it. The receiver will control the volume going to it from the signal that is going to it....so if that is not working correctly then there is something weird going on. You may possibly have the sub running a little hot or the crossover set wrong so that when the volume is turned down everything still sounds "boomy"

You also don't need to use both RCA inputs for the sub, some claim that it will give you better sound quality but I have never measured anythign that would suggest there was any truth to it.

P.s.

Take those speakers off "Large" You are basically telling the receiver to run them full range and you will quickly burn up the voice coils.

Thanks for the reply...Nothing I do can get the sub to respond to the receiver. I change the sound fields etc and it doesnt change the sound from the sub at all. I read the receiver manual and it sais that under certain sound fields there will be no sub signal, but my sub still keeps on playing.

What do you mean by it running hot? Also, I have messed the the low pass on the sub, but it doesnt help anything.

How exactly does LFE work, what would happen if I plugged my LFE from the receiver into one of my subs RCA?

Do you think this might be a bad receiver?

Thanks

Ok I did a lot of googling and read that you could hook up an LFE out to the left RCA input on the sub....Tired that and shes working perfect....Thanks for you input.

Haha, glad you got it working.

I meant running it hot as in having the gain turned up higher so that the subwoofer plays louder than your main speakers.
