Why was there such a big gap on MIN in Batman Arkham City? Makes me want´╗┐ to go with Intel for my next Build because Amd's Min was a ridiculous 10fps, while Batman Arkham City for Intel's cpu was 35fps... Was that game optimized for Intel cpus only or is AMD crap? That is a 25fps difference which is huge! Yes, I know it's the min but that means you won't see next to no slowdown using an intel processor with Batman Arkham City compared to Amd's where for brief seconds you could see it dip low. Am I looking too much into it?

Also, I'm still confused if I even need a new cpu when it comes to gaming since my Amd Phenom II x4 965 3.4ghz seems to be fine, but this guy online kept telling me how I'm bottlenecking it with my gtx 570. I don't understand what he means by bottlenecking because most games run fine for me on it. Or am I going to have to update my cpu if I want to get any future cards like 700 series or 8000 series cards? Is there a point where BottleNecking will show its affects in fps or not really?

I have yet to receive a clear cut answer on why a CPU is so important to pc gaming. I still think the majority of the work is being done by the gpu like 90/10 percent of the work, but I could be wrong with my guess.

Well, the trend right at the moment seems to be that some top tier games are starting to utilize multicore cpus, which AMD benefits from the most. This may be thanks to game makers prepping for PS4 or it's a fluke. However, in 99% of games out there are lightly threaded so AMD guys like myself need to settle for good-enough*. If good-enough isn't good enough for you buy an Intel, you cant go wrong with a I5, or just stick with your Phenom II.

As to the bottleneck question: some games may see a bottleneck and some will be able to utilize a 100% of your card. I am running SLI GTX 580s, the same two I ran on my old Phenom II 1100t and I can assure you I can have them both cranking 96-100% according to EVGA Precision in say Crysis 2 where in Skyrim they ran around 40ish% on each card so Skyrim is an obvious bottleneck. Newer cards will also either run free or bottleneck depending on the game, but newer cards (like a 670) are more efficient so if your cpu bottlenecks them your max fps will still be better then with your 570.

You do not have to update a cpu to be able to use the future cards but in the cases where you see a cpu bottleneck more IPC and or more threads on a cpu can alleviate the problem depending on how the game is coded. You are right though that most games ran at higher resolutions are bound by GPU performance and not cpu.

*When I say good-enough I mean that apart from some very very new games like Crysis 3, I have always been able to play any game I wish with graphics turned all the way up and still maintain a playable and viable fps@1080p even though a similar Intel setup may run the same game better.

Does the 8350 do sli or are you using a sli-hack? How much of an upgrade is it if I went from Amd Phenom II x4 965 3.4ghz to 8350? Are 8350 already at 4ghz without overclocking anything?

http://www.squidoo.com/amd-motherboard-cpu

That website is still ranking the Amd Phenom II x4 965 3.4ghz processor as one of Amd's better processors right after 8350. It makes me think the upgrade isn't worth it. But if I wait for a 700 series or 8000 series graphics card, will that bottleneck my Phenom by ridiculous margins or not at all?

SLI has to do with your motherboards chipset. The 990fx chipset was the first AMD chipset that will run two plus Nvidia cards in SLI I think. Older boards wont be able to and I dont know anything about a SLI mod. So yes a 8350 or a Phenom II x4 965 will run SLId cards on a AM3+ 990fx motherboard. And yes the 8350 does come at 4ghz with a 4.2turbo stock, but where is the fun in stock? lol

Yeah the Phenom II 965 is still a good chip and if OCed is as good or better then the 8350 in single or lightly threaded areas. The 8350 will shine in multithreaded applications, games coded for moar cores or if you multitask much like I do. AMD has bet the bank so to speak on multithreading being the way of the future and up till now that really has been kicking their butt, but there may be some hope for it yet. As to rather or not to upgrade...your call, I'm glad I did though, but like I said you really cant go wrong with a I5 or a I7.

Provided you play @1080p I wouldn't worry to much about bottlenecks on a single card setup or what 7## and 8### series cards will do.

EDIT: Well, any amd 900 series am3+ motherboard not just the 990.

I kinda Skipped over my original reason I meant to post about though... Batman Arkham City plays fine on a 8350 the 10fps thing in that video is a fluke and if you watch the video you can see that it is, there are no noticeable severe swings in its frame rate or at the very least it is super uncommon. I haven't I noticed any either when I play Arkham City.

You need to see frames over time in order to understand what that minimum means. It could be some irrelevant 1 second one time drop,it could be some sort of menu fps or it could mean that the FX is actually having a hard time at some part.
As for the phenom,in my opinion it is a misconception that stems from bulldozer release. All vishera chips are better gaming units imho. They outclass the 980 in well threaded games (4+) and even if the game isn't well threaded they either have the clocks or can clock high enough to surpass it.

You don't need a software driver to run a CPU; there's no driver that can improve the performance of an FX-8350 or any other processor sold today. (I say "today" because back in the days of the K6-2, video drivers could improve its gaming performance by optimizing for the 3DNow instructions implemented in hardware on the CPU. But that was 15 years ago.)

What the 8350 needs is for more software to be written to take advantage of its strong multithreading capabilities. You're starting to see this happen now. Anytime there's a new trend in hardware design, it always takes a few years for the software to catch up. When dual-core CPU's became mainstream, it took a while for assembly tools to be created that specifically targeted them. Now, tools that target CPU's with four or more cores are starting to become common.

Guys guess what? I have great news! I don't need a new cpu anymore because Nvidia released new drivers that now enables my gtx 570 to max out at 1920x1200 with ultra graphics and tressfx!!! Nvidia is the best! thumb.gif

Well, for the time being I'm going to let my Graphics Card do all the work even tho if I had a better cpu running at 4ghz, it probably would have taken a lot of stress of the graphics card.
