[ BUILD LOG ] The Lian-li ++++ iPC ++++ SFF watercooled Hackintosh!

post #1 of 30

Ok, so here we go! First work log, first "mod", and first watercooled rig. I have a feeling this small intro will be overlooked if I make it too long, so let's have it short and sweet, shall we? (edit: at least I tried, right? haha)

++++ BACKGROUND ++++

I've built my first computer back in May last year. I had been lurking on the forum for a while, and finally made the move. I was not aiming for something out of this world, as I'm not that much of a big computer user, as weird as that may sound tongue.gif
On the other hand, the process of choosing the parts took some time, as I had a very specific goal in mind: the rig was to be what's best known as a hackintosh. I guess you could say it was a pretty ambitious project for the n00b I was (and that I still am redface.gif )

I might add details as this goes, but that'll do for now. If you have any specific questions, I beg you to ask!
O and while we're a it, please spare me all the fanboyism/hatersgonnahate stuff regarding Macs vs Windows and all that jazz. yessir.gif

Picture from last year:

++++ THE PROJECT ++++

Ever since I joined OCN and started gathering the parts for my build, watercooling seemed to me like the absolute bees' knees. Once again, I did my homework, read a lot, thought a lot about it, and so the current project came to life. The goal is two-fold:
  • Swap cases - From CM 690 II to modded Lian-li PC-A55
  • Watercool - Custom loop w/ CPU and GPU block

Since I have only one computer (well actually 2, the second being my old dying laptop), I bought a second case to be able to take my time modding it while still enjoying the computer I built last year. While big cases are pretty nice when stuffed with video cards and watercooling gear, I thought a small case would complement my modest hardware better. Plus, I liked the idea of a small case for its practicality and the space challenge associated with it.
My plan was to keep my less-than-a-year-old hardware, for cost reasons, as well as for the fact that my hack works flawlessly. It if ain't broken, don't fix it, right? biggrin.gif

So anyway, I chose the Lian-Li PC-A55 as it was the smallest case I could find that would accept my full ATX board. The lines are clean, timeless, and it seemed pretty rare, so I went for it.

++++ WATERCOOLING STUFF ++++

I recently placed 2 orders. One at Dazmode, which I strongly recommend to any fellow canadian out there! wave2.gif
The second at Performance-Pcs, since Daz did not have all the stuff I wanted frown.gif

Anyway, here it is:
  • CPU BLOCK - EK Supremacy Acetal-Copper [arrived]
  • GPU BLOCK - EK VGA Supremacy Bridge Edition [arrived]
  • PUMP/RES - Alphacool DC-LT with top/res [arrived]
  • RADIATOR - XSPC EX240 multiport [arrived]
  • FITTINGS/TUBE - XSPC compression + black tube 7/16x5/8 [arrived]
  • COOLANT - Mayhem's pastel white [arrived]

Before I make this any longer, I'll let them pichers talk for themselves biggrin.gif

Enjoy, and thanks for looking! Any comments/jokes/movie quotes/questions welcome!

Content of order from Dazmode. Good packaging and super fast shipping, as usual thumb.gif

Please pardon the not so extravagant photography, I don't even have a tripod tongue.gif

Gotta say, EK's packaging is amazing. Looks stunning. The block will be used with the FC-bridge, but both PPCS and Daz were out of stock, so I'll have to order one from another store, along with the bits and pieces I'll have forgotten ^^.

Funny how I first disliked the CSQ when it came out. It kinda grew on me, and I think the satin finish looks amazing, especially paired with some pastel coolant.

Looking good man smile.gif small cases are hard to work with especially with water cooling in it
even I dont really have the guts

Yeah that CSQ design, it will actually looks better once you insert a 3mm led in it (there is a hole for it)

I, myself has been living in the CSQ world

though I'm not keen with the new fittings design from EK

but convince me with this build !

I too disliked the CSQ design, but once you see it in person, it's really nice too look at. I still have to add my CSQ cpu block that I got for Christmas. doh.gif Subbed!

Thanks man! I just bought 2 90deg CSQ fittings, but they should be used in quite visible locations, so we'll see. I thought they would complement the CSQ quite well tongue.gif

To be honest, I think Malik's build made me choose them:

Thanks for stopping by! I am a first time watercooler, so I guess I would have been excited to hold in my hand any block out there haha. Gotta say I am quite impressed with the finish and overall build quality of the EK blocks. Hope to see yours installed cheers.gif

Sorry for the lack of updates, but nothing is really going on atm. Still waiting on my second order from PPCs.

I've been playing around with acrylic a bit though, I guess I could upload pictures...

Well, guess what time it is? Update time!

Finally got my package from PPCs. Probably gonna stick to Daz in the future, as this stupid box cost me well over 70$ in shipping/brokerage/taxes. Content is about 150$ worth, so you do the math... doh.gif

Pretty much the content of the package

I'll finally be able to bring this puppy all back together. The open heart surgery has been going on for a while now biggrin.gif

Stay tuned, as this is just starting thumb.gif

Sorry for the lack of updates. Between skiing, family reunions and routine stuff, I haven't managed to get that much done.

I have been trying to finish sleeving my PSU. I wanted to swap fans, but managed to mess things up apparently. Made some sparks, and the molex power line on the PSU is dead. I"ve cut the other one... arrowheadsmiley.png

Wanted to see if the fan was faulty, tied it to a Mobo header, saw some sparks again. Header seems dead now madsmiley.png

Pretty pissed to say the least, was on the verge of leaving current non-modular PSU aside and buy this.

Any input/comments?
