[Escapist] EA Admits That SimCity Could Have Been Offline - Page 5

post #41 of 150
I've been playing the game for quite some time now, and I generally like it.

I knew it was multiplier based and I have nothing against it, otherwise I wouldn't have bought it. Playing together with friends is more convenient this way, not to mention grouping up with random people.

Server situation seems much better now than before.

That being said - there is a significant number of issues that still need to be solved, some of them affecting core gameplay. However, these shouldn't be grouped together with the multiplayer/always online issues:

1. RCI model not functioning, allowing residential only cities to be built;
2. Related to the above - parks providing happiness in absence of shopping, which allow the above to happen;
3. Traffic/routing problems;
4. Global market needs to be activated asap in order for prices to be adjusted dynamically. This will solve the biggest inbalance right now - which is ore/alloys->processors->consumer electronics, which comes from fixed trade prices;
5. Proper filtering of multiplayer games, so I can easily find one to join.

Note that 4 does require always online and multiplayer in order to function.

In short - the game is not perfect and a lot of things need to be corrected simulation wise. But I've been having fun with it, and missing things can always be added/corrected later. I am firmly in the camp of people who prefer to get a game as early as possible, instead of waiting for a "perfect" release much later.

Bottom line is - I am not an EA employee, and yet I have absolutely no problems with the game being always online or multiplier based. If that was Maxis's/EA decision, so be it, as it is their decision to make. So please, anti-EA mob - do not assume automatically that whoever doesn't agree with you must be EA fanboy or on their payroll.

You could've incorporated an offline mode? Wait you mean like every other SimCity ever?

Wait.. So how did they lie?

They're saying they could have made a single player game with multiplayer features but instead focused on the multiplayer aspect.

They lied when they said that the game was so complex that it had to be done online because your computer didn't have the processing power to handle the number calculations. That has pretty much been proven to be ... dun, dun, daa ... a lie.

And just to be serious and actually address what moo said... They said it wasn't possible to do a singleplayer game because of all the complex calculations the servers do... which they don't actually do.

This article is saying they could have made a single player game in the first place.. before they decided to go the multiplayer route. I also don't see having a severely gimped single player hack proves anything since it lacks some of the most important features of the game.

No, they lied because they said they need the servers to do the complex calculations, which they don't need the servers to do the complex simulations of the city at all. You can play the game fully offline and all you miss out on is the social aspect... the key part of Simcity.. the simulated city, works fine.

It's a absolute lie. Their vision is controlling the game play entirely and attempting to curb piracy and it has nothing to do with gameplay

Well, that is obvious since the original game was single player.

EA said complex calculations are done on their servers. Someone modded the game so it could be played offline, as in not connected to the servers. If EA weren't lying then that wouldn't have been possible, therefore they lied about it.
