Hello everyone, I am currently in the process of purchasing some new headphone since my closed hd 280 pros don't cut it anymore. I have desided to go with the sennheiser hd650's, I have an DAC with is supplied through my xonar d2x but don't know what a good amp is to power these cans or where to start, would like some help thanks.

Would the fiio E09K Desktop Amp be a good amplifier to run the hd 650's fully?

For the price, the E09K would be a good choice.
Check out the Schiit Magni head amp.

You could also try replacing your current Xonar D2X sound card.
The Creative Labs Z series sound cards come with a built in headphone amplifier.

This is a good site for asking about headphone amplifiers.

I dont see why I should replace my soundcard for, its far more capable of producing music with the dac and adc provided on it. Its a music enthusiast card after all. I just need an headphone amp to power the hd650's when I get them, I can get the E09K for 85AUD which is great but want to know if this is a top amp for theses cans and to future proof my investment. Ive looked at head-fi.org for headphones and here on ocn and since I listen to alot of types music I should get the hd650 but need something to power them.

Sennheiser HD650, $330-$400. Well built and comfortable, but slight clamping. Warm relaxed sound signature. Great bass and lows, mids and highs can be veiled without proper amping.

I'm just trying point out the best values and options.
The E09K (80AUD) is a really good value, but to some a "top amp" for the HD650 is spending $175-$500.

Try asking here about what works well for driving the Sennheiser HD650.

The HD650 is a picky little thing...but the only Amp I would ever recommend for Sennheisers would be the Bottlehead Crack. Nothing else even remotely comes close to it for use with Sennheiser sound.
Bottlehead Crack needs to be built and if you want it pre-built it will cost more money. getting it to Australia will kill you. just buy the Schiit Lyr

Speaking as someone who owns the E09K, I can say that it's a solid amp. Good value, especially when paired with the E17.

On the other hand, you should look into getting the Objective 2 Amp (O2 Amp for short.) The only reason I say this, is because it's a very clear amp. For solid reference class headphones like the HD650's you want something equal in terms of ability.

The E09K is a colored amp that does alter the sound signature some.
