What is a good headphone amp? - Page 2

it's been a while since I listened to any sound cards. I thought a $350 DAC would be a marginal upgrade over something like the $200 Essence STX but I guess I was wrong.

http://www.overclock.net/t/1368157/a-good-hi-fi-upgrade-for-me-300-to-400-euro-budget/10#post_19461896

the Sennheiser HD650 is not a entry level headphone. don't run a Fiio amplifier. your just wasting money.

I'm also of this opinion. I'm not as strong opinion on it being the only amp for the Senns, but it is definitely an excellent choice. You can find them used for ~420 already assembled. Excellent amp for the HD650s. Better than the Lyr if you want your mids to really shine. If you want some more bass out of the HD650s, the Lyr seems to do that well...though the rest doesn't seem as detailed as with the Crack.

So what amp would you recommend use with hd650's? I want something to hear the speakers to its full clarity and with a bit of bass not something thats overated and kills the lows mids etc.

your going to pay a premium living in Australia. if you can't afford a Bottlehead Crack, Schiit Lyr or Woo Audio WA3 I would just step down the headphone to a Sennheiser HD598.

That's just one model, it's pre-assembled if you don't want to DIY.

Mmm, not really interested in the hd 598 headphones was until I saw how excelllent the bass/lows are and with the right amp can make the mids/highs shine too with the hd 650s.

Worst advice for sennheiser headphones...
.

The Crack can be built for you by Bottlehead. You are going to have to live with AUS shipping rates, there isn't anything you can do about that. Just don't buy a Schiit Amp for use with Sennheisers, as they have poor sound stages and do not mesh with Sennheiser headphones. Go for a large and spacious amplifier, or listen to recommendations from someone who knows what they are talking about. With all due respect, Schiit Amps and Sennheisers do not mix.

I wasn't really talking about either headphone specifically, I own both and enjoy them both very much. I was more interested in your amplifier choice. Depends on your sound preferences, but either way a Schiit amp is dead last on the list of amplifiers that people recommend for use with Sennheiser headphones. Schiit amps have very small closed in sound stages that bottleneck the potential of most Sennheiser headphones, which are known for very good sound stage experiences. If you don't care about sound staging qualities that include stage depth, realism, width, height and envelopment, then you can pick any well rated amplifier and do very well. However, if you care about Sound staging qualities, Schiit is to be avoided. Another thing to consider is that Schiit amps are not quiet, there is a hum and hiss with more sensitive headphones. The Bottlehead Crack on the other hand is dead silent and has a jet black background with a very spacious sound signature that is most audio experts #1 choice for Sennheiser headphones.

NOTHING comes close to the Bottlehead Crack with the stock Westinghouse for use with Sennheiser headphones. Absolutely nothing sub $400. I have personally reviewed hundreds of amplifiers over just the past decade alone, the Bottlehead Crack is the only amplifier I've ever kept for myself. And for good reason. If not the Crack, than I would suggest hunting for a used TTVJ Apex Butte, which has been discontinued but remains the best solid state "budget" amplifier with exceptional sound staging qualities.
