I got mine for $150USD. eBay has them for $130USD. Please tell me of a Schiit amp thats under $50. Also, why are you mentioning 88.2khz when talking about an analog device?

Mad Lust Envy over on Head-Fi.org is using the Audio-GD Compass 2 amp for his Sennheiser HD-650's.

Mad Lust Envy writes some of the most cogent reviews and opinions on that forums and he doesnt do any of that ridiculous overexaggeration or embellisment common to those forums.

Here is his take on the amping the Sennheiser HD650.
Quote:
"Amping: I have the HD650 paired up with the Audio-GD SA-31 which is much more powerful than pretty much any amp most of you use, or would use, so I'm not exactly sure how they'd sound with less power, but I personally felt that they aren't as hard to drive as people make them out to be. They need considerably less power than the DT990/600, and possibly even the DT990/250. I'd say they'd need about as much as the DT990/32 for at LEAST volume level. We know power =/= volume, but it helps. To be clear: they do not need a lot to be driven LOUDLY. I tested them with the Mixamp only, and they can be driven off it loud enough. I didn't test it enough to see how well they're actually driven, but they sounded good. They may be a little thinner sounding, which could actually be a good thing for gaming, as it makes pinpointing sounds a bit easier than the very rich, thick signature the HD650s have with the SA-31."

I know my opinion doesn't measure up to Bumblebee's or Portals on this thread, but my wife and kids would leave me if I ever put that Bottlehead crack thingy anywhere within eye-shot. Yuck. I know SQ is SQ, but do aesthetics even matter anymore? I'd take a Schiit Magni / Modi anyday with the marginal SQ loss over the Bottlehead Crack soapbox derby consolation prize anyday.....

Just my 2 cents..,.

PS: I have a Aune T1 Tube DAC that I got real cheap direct from China FWIW. You can get one shipped to Australia for around $175 USD. Its a very well built amp / DAC from my experience. Drives my Q701's effortlessly.

I agree, but it doesn't do justice to the good stereo width of the HD650. But, beyond that it is definitely a top dog in the amplifier world. The Magni and Modi do not do justice AT ALL with any of the Orthos, so it would be a disaster with the HD650. Switching up between the Magni and my O2 is a huge difference in the overall size and width with the O2 being the clear winner, but the O2 is not really a "sound stage winner " to begin with. Also, the Magni hisses with sensitive iems and I really never would use it with my HD650. Plenty of power in the Schiit Amps, but they all serious lack in the sound stage department and that is one of the best qualities of the Sennheiser Headphones.

If you go with the O2, you will be VERY happy. It is a great mid tier amplifier. Make sure to let us know what you end up going with. PS. The Aune T1 and a telefunken 6922 is just about the best Dac setup you can get sub $500. Amazing little thing, the Aune is.

there you go. match made in heaven.

Don't get me started on 6moons website reviews. Also here's some real measurements of the 160D (along with other headphone amps):

http://www.innerfidelity.com/images/130219_AmpMeasurements_allamps.pdf

vs. O2 measured by Tyll, which measure up exactly the same as Nwavguy's measurements

http://www.innerfidelity.com/content/innerfidelity-headphone-amp-measurement-program-update-july-2012

Also the Mogi having more power means nothing for dynamic transducer headphones as it's overkill. It's like on OCN having a 900W PSU for a single card (or even SLI) GFX card setup. There's no point.
Also I'm not touching Audio-GD with a blunt stick. They measure horribly and always have.

Also I always rate imaging over soundstage as alot of studio recordings are done with nearfield speakers at 30 degrees anyway.

So whats all this mean that the Burson 160D isnt that good? And that there are better amps that are out there for the price.

Mmm... So what would you recommend I could get for the same price as an Burson 160D? Was thinking of buying one due to australian made and good quality components. As match for the hd 650.

good quality components but not well implemented / engineered.
As stated, if you don't mind the lack of connections and a need for an AC-AC adapter, the O2 + ODAC combo or just the O2 if you just want the amp part.

Would my xonar d2x be sufficient enought DAC to run with a dedicated amp, or should I get the combo?
