My Seek Error Rate just went to 100 today too. Weird. I also had a S.M.A.R.T. error when I restarted. Pretty sure I know what caused mine though. I'm backing up as much as I can right now, I suggest you do the same.

Compared to everyone here, I go against the grain when it comes to defragmenting. I don't do it. Every time I have ever defragged, and I mean since I've used a computer, problems arise. I just don't do it anymore and it hasn't affected me in one way. And no, it isn't what's causing my current problem.

I defragged my HD and then i went to 100.

then it recommended I defrag my system folder and stuff offline, so I booted and it did that, then it went back to 200

then it recommended i did SMART placement and now its back at 100.

***? How could defragging create problems? It might REVEAL existing problem but it shouldn't create problems. All it does is arranges the data blocks together. Defragging DOES free up some space and has a slight impact on performance.

Trust me, it has done nothing but create problems for me. So I stopped doing it a few years ago. Never had anything go wrong by not doing it.

Again... you do lose performance slightly. A few years ago in the computer world is like 4-5 generations past. HDDs have grown 10 fold in size since then and have become more sophisticated.

Defragging will not Damage or Impair your HDD in anyway. The things that you describe is simply Failing hardware...HDD's can fail Quicker when stressed. This is the only time you can blame Defragging as it does stress the drive...However you cant blame it driectly as a Drive that has issues with defragging due to failing hadware is a hardware issue and not a software fault.

I'm not arguing technology and I didn't even blame/ insult defragging, I'm just relaying my experience. Everytime I defrag, something happens. I'm not even saying it's the defrag itself, but I have terrible luck with it. So my past luck stops me from doing it again. Since I have stopped defragging, any problems I've had have been narrowed down to a specific cause and fixed. Whereas before, the problems that arose after a defrag couldn't be corrected until I formatted. Notice that I didn't actually blame the defrag as the cause of the problem. It may just be chance. I'm not saying everyone should stop defragging, I'm just mocking how it doesn't work for me.
