Well, you certainly are getting a wide range of opinions. Me thinks you're going to have to try it for yourself if you really think your missing out on something.rolleyes.gif

Getting very varied opinions. I tried the consumer preview a few months ago, the modern UI was horrible but if I use Start8 it gets rid of all that. The Windows 8 kernel is actually very nice, more stable and faster than Windows 7 but I don't think it's really worth it. I'll see what the upcoming 'Blue' patch brings to the table smile.gif

The UI in Windows 8 is not as bad as people claim it is however different and there is a learning curve. I am frankly amazed at how many geeks shy away from something new. Once you get the hang of it I have found I like it better.

Now that being said I do not think there is a compelling reason for anyone to move from Windows 7 to Windows 8. Windows 8 at it's core is a cleaned up Windows 7 but the streamlining, while very nice, does not give enough to make it worth spending money for.

If you had Windows XP or Windows Vista I would say it was worth it, Windows 7, no not really. Especially since you are going to go the no metro route.

If it does things better than Windows 7 then it's an upgrade, right? If you completely ignore the Modern UI then it is definitely an upgrade, you can't really argue with that. If you then consider the Modern UI, which is in some ways a slight upgrade, in others a dowgrade then overall Windows 8 is an upgrade, although admittedly not too much of an upgrade. Vista/XP to Windows 7 was by far a much bigger upgrade than 7 to 8.

Wow. I liked windows XP. I skipped Vista because I never bought it or a new computer during its release. I bought windows 7 when I bought a friends broken computer. I just built a new computer and put windows 8. I have always laughed at people who complain about something NEW.

So if I get something new and it has a horrible UI optimised for a touchscreen which I don't have, and it ruins the sound on my expensive sound card and speakers, I shouldn't complain about it but should instead sell my monitor, sound card and speakers?

Except it's a matter of opinion if it does things better than Windows 7. Productivity wise. I don't believe it does.

Productivity would depend entirely on the user. IMO for most people productivity wouldn't change much, if at all. It's not like there is a totally different way of doing things, It's just slightly altered.

From Wikipedia "As of February 2013, Windows 8 has 2.6% market penetration as compared with 44.5% current market share for Windows 7 and 39.5% for Windows XP respectively according to Net Applications research"
