Hey guys! thumb.gif

I'm considering building a server for home. We've got 2 desktops and my laptop, and I'd love to have everything in a server, centralized. Media, files, etc. And also I'd like to be able to acess the files when I'm away from home, which would come in handy for when I'm at school working on some code and I may need last week's homework, for instance. My goal is to at least be able to access over the internet the files, and inside the network be able to share the files with the other PCs in the network. Now, I can get Windows Server for free legally, but I could also just use a linux distro. What do you guys recommend? I'm still in the baby steps..I'm jotting down my hardware to-buy list as I write this...any suggestions would be much appreciated! biggrin.gif

Go for a Linux variant. Something like Open Media Vault or Amahi Home Server. If you just want plain file service, FreeNAS (BSD variant) is a good choice.

Linux works great if you wanna dive into something new, would be a great thing to tinker around with as well.

Went the Windows Home Server 2011 way myself, pretty much is a basic version of server 2008 v2 for cheap. I have a few windows only programs that run and MS gives you a free domain + web server that hosts access to your machine from anywhere. Plus I like windows VM server. Windows is probably the most problem free, but really depends what you want to do with it and the programs your gonna have it run.

Personally, I've become quite fond of FreeBSD for my servers which will work well on pretty much any pc(I have it installed on a very old 500Mhz PC with 64MB of RAM and on my brand new quad core xeon server with 32GB of RAM).

My advice would be go for windows if you don't want to spend a lot of time setting things up or go for FreeBSD or a debian stable based linux distro if you're willing to spend more time on it.

since your not doing anything too crazy I would personally go for windows server, for simplicity and support purposes. You can always run a linux vm for the applications that require it.
