Posible dead MB after BIOS flash? (M5A97 v2)

Thread Starter
Wow. I either have bad luck or just not that good with computers anymore. So I was checking the Asus website and saw there was a BIOS update for my board. Downloaded the latest 1602 BIOS, saved to a USB drive, and proceeded to flash withing the BIOS itself (always done it that way with no problems so far). The update was apparently successful and the PC rebooted itself. Then... no POST. No beeps, no nothing. Tried that USB flashback thing but nothing; the LEDs indicate a successful BIOS flash but the board just refuses to boot. Already tried booting up bare bones and even swapped the PSU. Nothing. You suck Asus.

Its more probable that you suck for messing up the flash process.

Did you have the Drive formatted as FAT32 or NTFS? Usually they will specify one format is required.
Did you remove the USB device when you restarted?
Also its common for them to have some other firmware that needs to be installed or updated after the initial flash and reboot.

Best bet is to contact them directly and ask what itll cost for a new BIOS chip (you'll likely need one with the version you were at before), or check on Ebay.
That is, if you have a removable BIOS chip.
Otherwise your S.O.L.

Dont worry though, it happens to the best of us.
Personally I avoid firmware flashes of the mobo unless there is a MAJOR issue to be addressed that directly affects me and my hardware setup.

Have you cleared the CMOS? or using the MEMOK! Button? Also pull 1 ram stick or swap slots for it and try that out.

Already cleared the cmos. Tried the memok switch thing, but the RAM is fine. As stated, I have already done several successful BIOS updates using the same procedure. I guess it's just one of those things. Already tried booting with no RAM sticks and the board does come back with the proper error codes (meaning that at least the CPU is OK). Tried swapping the GPU to the second PCIe slot (and changing the card itself). Disconnected all the drives. Swapped the PSU. I really have no idea what else to do other that replace the board. The fans and everything turn on, just the MB does not post. Dammit.

So I decided just to get a new board. Screw it. Already tried everything. Not a lot of affordable options down here. I'm between these two:

Asus M5A990X EVO R2

Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3

I run a single card setup and don't really care for all the extras except for overclocking potential, board quality (don't want to deal with overheating/exploding caps and stuff), and BIOS free issues. Dual boot between W7 and Linux. This dead M5A97 was rather Linux friendly, so I guess the M5A990X will be the same. Don't know about the Gigabyte board.

Fixed! Turned out to be one of the RAM sticks. Weird. Could ha sworn I checked all four yesterday. Down to only 16GB frown.gif. Oh well, RAM is much cheaper than a MB.

Crap. Just checked local prices for RAM and they went up. Bastards. Gonna go next week and see if they give me in-store warranty on the stick that died.

Melcar, the last time I updated the BIOS for my Asus mobo, I used Asus Update the Desktop App.
Have you ever used it?
I have an old mobo (M4A785-M) yet another update came out about 3 mos ago. (v. 1101)

Asus Update worked well, I used the update from file option on the desktop. The file had to be extracted. If I remember correctly,
I put it in documents to navigate to it easier.

Nice you got it figured out. thumb.gif Still kind of weird the way it happened.

Well, I'm not updating the BIOS in a while biggrin.gif. May just keep my rig with 16GB of RAM anyway. A lot easier to overclock and load temps even went down a whole 5*C. Must have been really stressing that NB.
