Watercooler in need of advice...

Well folks, it's been some time since I last posted asking for advice, but I sure could use some...

This system is about 4 years old at this point, and the water cooling gear is about 3 years old. I thought I could get by air cooling in a mid-tower with 5HD's , a Gallation Extreme Edition, and a 9800XT....HA! Scary how out dated all of that is by todays standards.

System Specs:

P4 3.2GHz 478 Extreme Edition
1.5GB Corsair XMS C2
2x36GB Raptor in RAID0
2x250GB in RAID0
250GB IDE
Plextor CD-R
Plextor DVD-R
Pioneer DVD-R
Sound Blaster Audigy 2ZS Premium

TDX, MAZE4 Northbridge, MAZE4 GPU, single bay res, D4, Black Ice Extreme

Anyway my real issue is having a non-functional computer for about 3 weeks now. I have not had the time to really sit down and give it the time it needs, nor am I totally sure of where to start. Usually I am pretty good trouble shooting hardware, but this time I really am at a loss as to what I should try next.

Initially I was experiencing random system wide lockups so I cut the overclock back to stock speeds. I was having issues loading windows, sometimes I would get to the progress bar, sometimes it would freeze before that. Sometimes I wouldn't get past the POST, sometimes I could get into the BIOS and then I would get stuck. Randomly when the computer would start up I would have lost all of my BIOS settings for the CPU, memory timings, and speed settings, everything else in the BIOS was fine. Sometimes when starting up I would get the "CPU has been changed or is unworkable". My voltages for the CPU were not as steady I noticed as well, which was a surprise since I've burned through 2 OCZ 520Watt Powerstreams, yes 2 power supplies in 2 years. I've since then got a 510Watt PC Power and Cooling.

I've tried all suggestions from members previously, such as removing the battery, or replacing the battery. Ive reflashed the BIOS just to make sure it wasn't corrupted, reset the CPU, reset the memory, reset all cards, changed to a totally different HD not using the RAID setup. Tried a different video card.

I redid the watercooling, changed all the hoses, changed the water and added a northbridge block because the stock heatsink was quite hot to the touch.

I'm not sure what I should try next, or what you guys think I should look at doing. I don't really play a whole lot of games....UT2004 or CS every once in a while....I would hate to have to do a total system upgrade since I still think there is some life left in my processor.

Thanks for your input as always!!

I think I've personally experienced your problem with my rig. I use to have this MSI motherboard in a work PC I used till we had a few brown outs and my HD's got fried. I had my motherboard replaced but I held onto the old MSI motherboard and used it to build my Game PC you see in my system specs. I got it all togeather and when I tried loading a OS on it, it would freeze. So i eventually got XP on it with some luck but when I tried loading any software it would lock the sytem up. It would also lock up randomly during idle at times. It was soo odd because it would boot and run but once in windows it would freeze after a while.

So I bought a identical MSI board from newegg and it worked fine. Although I did change my ram to the XMS around then too but I still think it was the motherboard. My guess if you don't already have a UPS something like that cold have happen to you. But, I dono, its just a though.

As far as your system being old, I think its respectable. Its alot better than my oldest pc I bought 4-1/2 years ago that I still use.

Ive had this rig on APC battery backups since the day I put it together. For the last 2 years its been on an old APC Smart-UPS 1000. previously it was on a Back-UPS 450.

I'm having a hard time finding a decent motherboard for socket 478....nothing with a northbridge of 875P, which I think I should keep.

hmmm I was going to say that it sounds like you aren't using a UPS. *shrug*

Is there any part of your computer that isn't plugged into the UPS?

The whole system is protected by the backup, I have both monitors as well as the system itself, any external devices are plugged in such as usb hd's. Printer and scanner are about the only things not plugged into the battery.

Weird...I don't really know what to tell you. If you have everything plugged in I'm guessing it's just a bad mobo, but that's weird that you had to replace that many PSUs. Does your area have regular UFO sightings?

I built a rig as a 'portable sound studio' for a couple friends of mine, 'few years back.

Used a p4 3ghz-sumthin er other-, IC7 Abit, 500w Antec TP, 2g of Corsair VS. ddr400, 3 x 250g WD hd's {RAID_0}, Creative platinum pro. Long story, short.....the rig was sick, Oc'd to a mild 3.6ghz, and ran like a charm for 2yrs and 1month.......then one day, it just died. After EXTENSIVE troubleshooting, I determined that the RAM had somehow caused a fatal error and would NO longer work! ***? Sounds pretty close to the 'ghost' problems I was having.
*Ended up buying some of the fancy-shmancy Corsair w/ the LED's.....started right up, found the windows boot, and has been runnin ever since. What was REALLy wierd was that the "bad" RAM would function just fine in all of my other systems...just not on the Abit board, . Come to think of it, the pair could have been 'binned' differently, or had different default latencies too I guess, but .....it took just over 2yrs for it to finally decide it wasn't going to "work" anymore, LOL

well I did try different ram borrowed from a friend, and that didn't seem to make any difference. I just assumed the two power supplies that I went through were result of poor quality, and overloading?? I got the OCZ 520 like right when it came out, and when I was using them i did have 8HD's connected in total...since then I have gotten rid of the older 100GB hard drives I had from a previous build. They were the Western Digital 100GB 7.2K 8MB cache ones, the FIRST 8MB cache hard drives...still puttering on....

It sounds like your mobo then.

That's pretty much what I figured, I just needed someone else to finally come to that...So assuming it's my mobo, what do you think would be my best options as to go from here?? Trying to find a decent socket 478 is kinda tough, any local shops charge an arm and a leg for a socket 478 mobo, and trying to find a decent one online is getting tougher by the day....
