Caviar Black disappeared, bad health, then good health, then unknown?

Hey,

Couldn't think of a better title. Earlier today my 3 year old 500GB Caviar Black, which is very noisy and a bit slow, disappeared from my computer. My whole system froze, Firefox crashed, then after about 30 seconds it unfroze and the drive had disappeared from My Computer. I checked the cables and they were still secure, restarted and it appeared again, only this time:

Looked on WD's site, turns out it's in warranty until 2015, so started to register an RMA. Got half way through, then the CrystalDiskInfo changed, saying everything was good and it's health was good. confused.gif

I'm running a full error scan with HDTune now, will post it here when it's finished, and I just started up CDI again and it says this:

Shall I continue with my RMA? I mean, it's been noisy for a while and is gradually getting slower, and it genuinely stopped working and gave bad sectors, but I don't want to get an Advance Replacement, send mine back and then they charge me because there isn't anything wrong with my drive...

Any advice?

So the error scan has finished and it's found no errors...anyone see anything wrong on CDI? The reallocated sectors counts is still at 200, but I have no idea what that means. tongue.gif

Send them the data you have and if they say Rma then I would.
Infact I would Rma anyway n just wait for your replacement rather than getting an advanced Rma n thry find no fault like you said

Seems dead to me.

I've only quickly browsed through this thread, but in case you havn't done so already:

Swap the sata cables and/or the SATA port. I've lost count how many times the SATA cable itself has been responsible for dodgy HDD activity. I could be wrong, but perhaps this could be an issue with chipset? especially if you're talking about an overclocked rig. All are worth considering.

But tbh, it's more then likely a dead hdd.

Thing is I have nothing to backup the 350GB~ of data on it, so I'd need an advanced replacement. frown.gif

I'll try to get in contact with them, thanks. smile.gif

I can tell. rolleyes.gif

My rig is stock. The hard drive is working perfectly fine now, that's the thing. I even just installed 'I am Alive' on it through Steam and played 2 hours of it, and it's fine, but it's worried me a lot...

Smart data looks fine to me.

CDI looks like it just glitched out for a second.

has the drive given you any other issue? If not it is fine. It could have just been a system glitch. Or a driver glitch, maybe reinstall the SATA driver?

As for what the smart data says look at the raw data column. It is in hex so you need to convert it to decimal first before you can read it normally. Go to function > Advanced feature > Raw values > 10 [DEC]

Then you can see the actual values.

You stated you checked the cables, not that you swapped them. Figured it wouldn't hurt suggesting the latter as nobody else did. Your choice, though. Just because the cable looks good, doesn't mean it is.

Good luck.

Good luck.

The cable has been fine for 3 years, don't see why it'd go bad now. Although I do see your point, I apologise if I sounded condescending earlier. Thanks for the advice. smile.gif

Quick update: Contacted WD via a support email, explaining exactly what I did in this thread and attached the screenshots, they got back to me today and said even though it's fine now it could be the beginning of a mechanical failure, so they have recommended an RMA! wheee.gif

Just need to transfer all of my data to a spare drive then I'll send it off and hopefully get a new 500GB Caviar Black back. Hoping it'll be quieter, too..

I must day, their support is great. 5 year warranty, quick support, nice people, painless (so far) RMA. I'm going to be switching the2 X 1TB Seagate (2 year warranty) Barracudas I have in my RAID1 array to WD drives when I upgrade it to 2TB for sure. This whole thing has me appreciating a good warranty. tongue.gif

Just FYI, WD changed their warranties last year. Worth looking into it but the Caviar Black drives still have 5 years warranty.

I was going to get one of the new WD Red drives as they seem to be great for RAID/NAS/Storage, but they only have a 3 year warranty, the Blacks do still have a 5 year warranty as you said. Weird, you think they'd give the Reds 5 year warranties, they have 24/7 phone support for them...redface.gif

Went to backup last night and the hard drive I was going to backup to has also failed it seems (an old Hitachi), my rig doesn't seem to want to boot with it in at all, regardless of what I change/do in the BIOS/Boot order. Weird. No matter though, have an empty 1TB drive at work. Let the backup begin!
