GPU rendering

Hey there,

I'm doing some research into building an awesome workstation/rendering machine for 3D and video-editing. So far i'm planning to use the Asus Z9PE-D8 WS, two Xeon E5-2687Ws and 64Gigs of fast RAM. I'll probably use two SSD's (OCZ Vector's), one for software and one for caching. A soundcard is also an option.

The thing i struggle with are the GPU's. So i have two questions.
1. Is GPU rendering good enough for final production? For 3D i'm using V-Ray, for video i'm using Premiere. I know that premiere benefits from cuda.
2. IF the answer on the first question is YES(!), then what GPU should i get? Some say get quadro or tesla, some say get an high end consumer card (GTX 680) or even Titan. Maybe even SLI?


At the moment, there is not a fixed budget, i just need to find the fastest solution as possible. Please advice.

GTX 580 beats the 680 in overall HP and the Comput/CUDA is better. I even read an article about the 680 being more Gaming then a Work Horse. Now a Titan, that card, if money allows, is your best bet. But it comes down to this:

1-3x GTX 580 3GB SC= $350-$750
1-2x GTX Titans 6GB SC= $1,000-$2,400

My biggest worry with GPU rendering is the RAM capacity. Even two 6GB titans don't come close to the 64GB i'm putting in. I don't want to run out of RAM when rendering really big projects.

At the moment i'm leaning towards getting one titan and use it for fast previews and cuda cores, and the do the final production rendering on CPU and RAM. Does this sound good?

I would keep final production on the CPU. There is a noticeable quality difference between GPU and CPU rendering.

I've done some further digging, and I think I've come to a conclusion: I'll do the 3D stuff on CPU/RAM combo, should be more then just fine. For faster video editing with After effects and Premiere i'll use cuda cores. For that i'll use two GTX 660ti. This will give me the same amount of cuda cores and VRAM as a Titan, but for nearly half the price.

Adobe say that they do not support SLI, but both the GPU's will be used. Enabling the 660ti for Adobe should be as easy as adding them to the textfile with supported cards.
