Why is my PC making this noise?

Thread Starter
I built this system in December 2012 and I honestly can't remember if it's always been there as I used to have the computer under my desk now I have it on my desk so it's a lot closer and I can hear more from the computer and this horrible whining is really getting to me. It's stopping me from enjoying my system as it happens when I'm gaming on the computer.

Can anyone help?

Should I RMA the power supply?

Thanks for commenting smile.gif

I honestly don't think it's the hard drive.. the source of the sound is coming from the Corsair TX-650.

that is a common coil whine famous on some Corsair power supplies.
go too their forums and select the RMA link in the left column and they
replace it under warranty.

I'm not sure if it's the fan either, it sounds more.. electrical if you know what I mean. I don't even know to be honest. But yeah I am considering getting an RMA on the PSU but then some people say it could be the graphics card.. (MSI GTX 670). I did take the card out and run Hitman: Absolution again and no sounds like in the video came from the computer. So like I say I'm not sure if the PSU is faulty or the graphics card, even both? I haven't got a clue. frown.gif

It definitely does seem like it. But would a replacement of the same unit really fix the noise issue as I'm sure the replacement has the same chances of giving the same coil whine noises. That's my main worry and annoyance really. Also I purchased the PSU from SCAN Computers in the UK. Would it be just as good going through an RMA with them instead of Corsair?

Thanks for helping out!

Corsair forums has a psu troubleshooting sticky in the psu section,
if gives tips on what too do to maybe get rid of the noise or how to determine
if it is the psu or graphics card, graphics cards will only make that noise under load.

Definitely coil whine, I've heard it before several times. Contact Corsair for RMA replacement, it's a known issue with some of their supplies, and they'll make it right. They might even cross-ship you one if you supply a credit card to cover the cost in case you don't return the original.

if your past the store warranty then Corsair is your best bet as I think yours is 6 years.
and yes it can be a hit and miss if you get another with the same noise.
