I've never used a piledriver but I'm still rocking the 965, heavily overclocked though. It seems to hold up in most of my games.
Piledriver beats the Phenom II's in gaming 95% of the time. Bulldozer beat Phenom II in about half of the games out there and lost in half of those out there.

The FX-8320 for $139 at Microcenter is impossible to ignore. That much power for that little money is just insane.

That is dirt cheap, to bad I don't have a Microcenter near me. I don't know whether to hold out for Steamroller or get an 8320/50. I assume my motherboard would be better for a Piledriver than it would a Steamroller though as Steamroller also launches with a new chipset.

This is a build for a friend of mine. His budget is $700 and will probably be used mainly for gaming since he has a macbook for productivity. So, really would it be worth getting a $150+ CPU for a lower priced GPU? I currently have a 7870 XFX Ghz ED 2GB GPU at $250.

That's my AMD Phenom II x4 965 BE. pretty easy and fun to OC. Worth the money. Not the best. but sure as hell aint the worst. I play BF3 with my GeForce GTX 550TI. 67 FPS on ultra. I'd say it's nothing to cough at. If you have money for something better. by all means.... GET IT! but if money is something you're worried about. I would Recommend the 965 and OC it. I love this CPU.
