The FX-8350 beats the hell out of the 965. When I switched from my 965 to the 8350, the difference seemed massive O_O
Windows runs crisper and faster, the lag spikes in Borderlands 2 (for example) disappeared, and the CPU seemed to handle all the programs I usually have open much better than the last one, with less lag or stuttering.

From my experience, although the 965 is still better than a lot of the junk out there, the FX-8350 makes it look like a joke. biggrin.gif

Push more money for the 6300 if possible. Otherwise, the 965 is still a good chip for a low budget.

Throw a 965 on a good 990FX and it should hit 4.2 relatively easily and will be a decent gaming proc. 6300 more OC headroom and more efficient in some apps.

If you're near a Microcenter OP, there is no contest since the 3570K is $189 with $40 off Z77 right now and that's a no-brainer for a gaming machine. Even with a mild 4.0-4.2 OC they're more than capable for a midrange gaming rig.

I can testify to this having just bought a i5 3570k to replace an AMD 965 BE.
