Can you use a wifi card as a hotspot?

Thread Starter

Hi, i was thinking of getting an asus pce-ac66 wifi card so i can use my wireless devices with it due to the inconvenience of my router placement. Can you do this with it or is it only to connect the pc its connected to to a router?

Thankscheers.gif

What you want can be done, but Im not too sure about that particular card choice. the asus pce-ac66 uses the Broadcom BCM4360 chipset. I cannot find much information about using this in hostap mode (host access point). It will also depend on the operating system and drivers used to achieve either a wireless repeater (for your current network) or setting up a separate wireless network (same SSID different channel can work well).

http://wikidevi.com/wiki/ASUS_PCE-AC66

I've no experience using windows as all my experience is with pfSense and Atheros chipsets, which are better supported in hostap mode as far as I know. Maybe a windows wireless guru can confirm how this would be done that way.

I know that Qualcomm Atheros 9280 is well supported for this, but only does the 2.4 GHz band so don't know if this is a limiting factor.

You can look at Ralink and TP-link as well, they have quite a few supported chipsets as well.

Try using connectify www.connectify.me

As far as I know it works with most chipsets, and the free version should do what you want.

Also, it may be more cost effective to invest in a better wifi antenna assuming your router has an external one. Placing them higher up and free from obstacles is the general recommendation. I would only look at repeaters or additional networks if you are trying to spread service over multiple floors and a wide area in general. Just something to think about. It really all depends on the layout you have and what your requirements are.

Also, is the computer that you plan to install and configure this on going to be run 24/7? that should be a consideration (in terms of power) as well.

I agree Connectify is a good product that can be use with a laptop or desktop, Wifi adapter.
as was stated use the free version. There is no limitation as far a chipset. It just works well.
It is an inexpensive way to set up a hotspot. Give it a try at least and its free. It only takes a few minutes
to set up. I use to make a hotspot for my I-Pad when I am at my Moms house and when family
comes over they use my wifi hotspot because my Mom does not have internet at her home.

If you want you also can add a Wireless access point which you would put in between router and
area you are trying to reach. Using any of these products requires trial and error. You need
to test which works for you and placement of Access Point. Wall thickness, distance, multiple floors
all this needs to be considered when setting up your system.

ok, thanks for the program ideas.

i plan on only using this as a hotspot, not a connection to our router, and since it does have a base that you can put on places like the wall or whatever that should be fine. I am using ethernet to my pc and i dont plan to change that
